Ryzom gets a greenlight on Steam

There’s something to be said for having all your games snuggled together on one platform, and now Ryzom may be on its way to joining Steam. The community voted to greenlight the free-to-play sci-fantasy sandbox, which opens the door to adding it to Steam’s library. Currently Ryzom offers players the opportunity to delve deeply into a vibrant world filled with wildlife that acts realistically and interactive events with actual live NPCs on the PC, Mac, and Linux; it’s available in German, English, Spanish, French and Russian.

ZenDadaist Preventing resource node explosions and gas releases is basically a minigame.  It’s not RNG-based.

neserbohy Grimmtooth Hmm everyone lost all items and dappers ingame thats about it.
You had 2 options:
– go reckless get some supper gear at start but all skills where set to 0
– keep your lvls but loose all dapper and items
(for accounts that where subbed or once where subbed, f2p accounts got full wipe)

You can just resub your account and send in a support ticket and they will try to restore your old  character (because they need to do it by hand and such it does take em a week or 2 before character is restored with all his skills)

You Ryzom toons can be restored, just follow instructions in this post:
http://app.ryzom.com/app_forum/index.php?page=topic/view/17288/1&post115502=en#1

You will restart with your toon on beginners island Silan, with some basic gear only, as everybody did. Community will probably help with new gear.

This game was way ahead of it’s time and I am glad to see it is still around.

Grimmtooth If I remember right, they purged all the dead accounts and inventories to make the merge easier. Originally they wanted to clean the slate entirely, but players protested. So this is what happened instead: http://app.ryzom.com/app_forum/index.php?page=topic/view/14114/1

falloutdc Grimmtooth PurpleCopper I just reloaded the game last night.
My account still existed but toons were gone. I hadn’t logged into the game since I got their email notice 1-2 years ago. I would look up the date but I lost my hard crashed & I lost my everything from back then.

I remember when way back in beta I logged in the first time, had that little strange creature walk up to me … (was a yubo). I had no idea if it is herbivore or going to attack me, just saw the eye icon pop up above it (indicating it looks at you) and walk over. I stood there frozen and had no clue if I should hit it (no levels or other indications how strong something is).
It lifted a leg. And peed on me.
I’m not kidding.

Just a few weeks older than WoW, yet looking heaps better than vanilla WoW ever did… released unfinished, with bugs that never got fixed… full of groundbreaking concepts unseen in a MMORPG before, or ever since…  killed and resuscitated two times, re-released as open source… with the player base so small and firm they know each other by name.

It’s like a smelly old dog you owned since childhood: half blind, half deaf, asleep most of the day, but she’s still refusing to let go, and so do you.

Wow, what a blast from the past. I always meant to try this game way back in the day and it seems now I’ve got another reason to.

I played a trial version of Ryzom back when it was a subscription mmo. I found it extremely interesting, but decided at the time that I couldn’t afford the time of playing Ryzom and WoW.

From what I have read over the years it is truly a unique experience and has some “forward reaching” concepts, at the time it was introduced. I think since it has found a new ownership its’ community has grown a bit and is truly close and dedicated…

Another game I forgot existed. The world environment was interesting but the rest just made me yawn and move on. This is the game in which a resource node in the noob area exploded and one shot killed me based on some RNG roll. I decided then and there that if just harvesting something might instakill you with no way to defend yourself, I wasn’t interested in wasting my time.

All of the zombie video games have nothing on Ryzom.  Talk about something that just keeps coming back from the dead!

Man that game takes me back. It is still very unique. But only old school gamer’s would play that game now.Glad its still around. It really is a very different game but new mmo player’s will find it old.

Valcan321 solaralune  Yep.  Some of the indie studio games coming out are doing this… but Ryzom did so much for taking some of the really cool single player gaming ideas, or even their own innovations, and running with it.  The game deserves it’s props for that.

I could use another reason to give this game a shot again.

I remember playing this a few years ago. Very different, I liked how you could break apart abilities into components and then reassemble to make new abilities.  Good stuff!

MJ Guthrie That’s really cool.  Like real RP.  Guess I’m trying this although the graphics are a bit outdated for moi.

PurpleCopper It has actually had a couple of reboots. Seems to happen when they have a new regime running it.
The last one was a total wipe & restart server merger about ..a year & 1/2 ago or so.
I fairly sure it is run as a labor of love & sustained by donations now.

It has several interesting features that several AAA studios could learn from.

Ryzom is probably the most unique MMO game I’ve seen in a very long time.

I’d be great if they rebooted it or made a sequel.

There is something I quite love about Ryzom… the lil MMO that refuses to keel over, rebounds, grows and just keeps going. It is a MMO that is an anchored stone, in the  constantly changing stream that is the MMO genre. I hope it continues to be around for a long time. Even if I don’t play, its presence is comforting. I hate how so many MMOs come and go.
