Ambitious Project Gorgon is back on Kickstarter

Third time’s the charm for Project Gorgon’s Kickstarter, right? We hope so, as the ambitious indie fantasy sandpark is asking for a modest $20,000 to further its development. Unlike most Kickstarter MMOs, Gorgon has already been greenlit on Steam. The game’s alpha is also freely available to the public, so there’s nothing stopping you from seeing whether or not Asheron’s Call veteran Eric Heimburg’s feature-rich sandpark mashup is worthy of your time and money.

Gorgon has “a heavy concentration on discovery and exploration,” according to the Kickstarter intro vid. The game’s other big thing is immersion, and in addition to a robust skill-based progression system, the title features player-managed shops and stalls, player-created quest content, story-focused live events, and shopkeeper NPCs whose inventory depends on what other players sell them.

This game is goddamn ugly, but holy shit there’s a lot to do here, a lot to figure out, a lot to explore, a lot to learn even in pre-alpha! Several times it felt like a roguelike or a MUD where the developers had the guts to introduce whatever little stupid ideas they came up with. I mean seriously, whose ideas were things like downtime activities with NPCs, autopsy on monsters, animal skills, power words, voluntarily hardcore death penalty? Some might not seem to add much depth to the game, but I simply love them because they make the game more immersive.

CistaCista Reading the forums it seems they only plan to wipe inventory for the sake of economy, and possibly reset a few skills if there are major changes.

Check out the list of wacky skills currently in the game: http://projectgorgon.com/wiki/Skills
One of the skills is Dying. Not as in, “it takes skill to die in this game”. As in, “you level up your Dying skill when you die in this game”.

Finally, a skill I can excel at…

Wow, that guy in the Kickstarter video sure sounds familiar.  Can’t put my finger on who it is though. /obvioussarcasmisobvious
I really wish I wasn’t a poor college grad so I could throw money at this.  :(  Hope it goes well though, Gorgon looks/sounds pretty awesome.  Still haven’t taken the time to check it out yet though.

Despite having failed Kickstarters in the past, Gorgon’s dev team (seemingly one guy?) has continued to work on the game anyways, and seemingly without any financial support. There’s even a thread of people asking for some way to donate money: http://projectgorgon.com/member-forum/forum/general-gorgon-discussion/130-take-my-money
It’s been a while since I last played, but from what I could tell, most of the features mentioned in the video are already in the game. Despite being rough around the edges, especially aesthetically, the game is in a very playable state. Even the goons over at SomethingAwful, who normally shit on every game (currently Revival), have managed to amass a small following for the game; take that as you will.

“But I love how in the first hour I’ve levelled up Gourmet and Mycology skills, milked a player controlled cow, and gotten a pork shoulder from killing a wolf.”
“It definitely feels like he is going for a late 90’s era MMO (EQ1, UO, etc..) where there is no hand-holding telling you where to go next, and there are a lot of ways to get murdered in the world. So like the poster above me said, it does sort of have a feeling of demons souls in that regard, where exploring the world is dangerous and fun (ignoring the lack of collision on many objects or the bad farclip distance), and where figuring out where to go next is part of the enjoyment, I guess. ”
“I can’t believe how much fun I had with this awful game.”
“You can be transformed into one of 5 different animals (cow, pig, spider, werewolf, I forget the last one) which each have their own 50-level progression path of combat ability and armor. Cows can be milked by other players and eventually learn how to milk themselves. You can learn the art of necromancy, which levels up only through the act of dying in new situations (might only mean different mob types, haven’t tested extensively).”
“This game is MMO Skyrim for mental patients but with diablo for mental patients’ loot.”
“I unironically want these so hardcore. +30 damage to snails is rather niche but really powerful since there is a dungeon full of snails.” (referring to a set of knuckle weapons)
“If you talk to the stablemaster as a pig, he tells you that while he is willing to house your pets, provided that they cannot talk, he does not trust talking animals and you’d better not try to sneak into the stable pretending to be someone else’s pet because he knows what you look like now and he’ll recognize you.”
“I believe the creator had something to do with making Asheron’s Call. If you imagine an Asheron’s Call developer got super bitter about having to move back into his mom’s basement after AC2 failed, and then proceeded to huff paint for a few years before getting an adderal prescription and starting this project to implement all of his ideas Turbine turned down back in the day you’ll get an idea of what this game is trying to accomplish. What I am saying is it’s a pretty awesome game.”

And that’s all just from the first page! http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3701175
Look, it’s completely free to try for now, so you don’t have to complain about having blind faith, and the dev(s) obviously give a shit about their game, which is probably more than you can say for most game companies… which admittedly isn’t a high bar to begin with.

Armsbend They provide a freely playable existing game that anyone can try BEFORE investing.  That seems more than fair to me, and less of a risk than a lot of other kickstarter projects out there with nothing to show beyond a few stills or one fly-through.

And, it’s him and his wife, so two people experimenting…  :)

Jacobin CastagereShaikura I like how you blame on just the PVE part of the game for the reason. Such a tired line being posted all the time. Its the mixing of PVP and PVE that is one of the problems with these games. So typical with the PVE is the problem why mmo’s are failing. So sick of hearing that.

CromulentWord Tithian But “something for their trouble” won’t really complete a worthwhile game, will it?

Jacobin
Guest
Jacobin

CastagereShaikura Its not worth it anymore because big budget PVE based theme parks cost way to much for the time it takes to complete their content and therefore have low player retention, and people are just tired of playing the same quest grind over and over again. Its silly to think that development decisions are based on what a small number of people post in forums.

Armsbend CromulentWord Tithian and that’s alright by me, there is always a risk when it comes to crowd
funding, and you can’t be sure about the game, they might do it and
finish it.

$20,000 so one fellow can experiment with game design on your dime.  Because he will not be finishing it on $20,000.  Ever.

This point in time will be looked upon in the future as a literal joke.  The joke is on us.

Love the humour in the pitch video.

Doesn’t look like it’ll be the runaway success of other Kickstarter MMOs with charismatic big name devs or slick marketing. But I backed it anyway, because it appears to be an actual PvE-focussed sandbox MMO. The world needs more of them.

Tithian In their previous Kickstarter attempt, they asked for $100K and only reached $23K (so they didn’t receive a cent). At least this time it looks like they’ll get something for their trouble…

This is the future of the mmo. Small indie company’s putting out an idea and asking gamer’s to pay for that idea. The genre is truly over for the big game companies. They just don’t think its worth it anymore. Specially with how the player base’s for these game’s are today with all the complaining and the so called arm chair developer expert’s posting on game boards  how the game’s should be made just for them. Can’t blame the big companies for saying screw it. Every time i see one of these kickstarter’s i die inside a little. The glory day’s are really over for this genre.

I get the feeling that if he was asking for $200k+ and wasn’t offering a trial, he’d be funded already. But with 20k, people already go into it with the expectation that it’ll be shit (it isn’t by the way). Similar to how a perfectly good vegetable on its own on the supermarket shelf will never sell because ‘something must be wrong with it’, but put 10 of lesser quality together and chances are you’ll sell 8/10.
