Anarchy Online is getting ‘Recked’ with new zone, sub rewards

On Sunday, Anarchy Online Lead Designer Henry “Michizure” Senger opened up on the forums with a look at what’s going on in the world’s most classic sci-fi MMORPG. The big news is that the game is getting Recked. Actually, it’s just getting The Reck, a brand-new region loaded with points of interest and daily missions intended for players level 90 to 170.

“As previously stated, the intention of this playfield is to offer a new area to level up through the bulk of title levels 4 and 5. Between the various camps and the playfield-specific daily missions, I believe this playfield will offer a solution to those who have had difficulty making it through this section of leveling; if this proves to not be the case, I will work make it so. While the intention is not to completely trivialize certain other sources of XP, I do intend to have The Reck be a viable leveling option. Finally, in addition to being a source of experience, there are many classic and new dyna bosses to be hunted.”

The Reck is currently on the test server, but once it’s gone live for everyone, Senger says, Funcom will be working on themed and cycling “missions and challenges aimed at specific areas within the game,” akin to dailies.

Anarchy Online players can also expect expanded subscriber rewards akin to the rewards Funcom is rolling out for The Secret World.

“In upcoming updates, we intend to expand the rewards for being a subscriber, through both the Veteran Shop and via additional rewards based on months subscribed, starting from the launch of this system. The Veteran shop has stagnated for a long while and I intend to add in some more meaningful rewards to be worthy of spending those precious Veteran Points. To add more value to being a subscriber, at various month markers, some new account-wide rewards will be unlocked. We hope to have this system launch in the coming months and I look forward to giving out some new rewards. The reward list and schedule should be made available closer to the launch date.”

That would work. But no one goes there. So it would require publicity. If I was them I’d create a webpage devoted to AO2. Put up some concept art and a link to donate. Put up goals and etc.

Zardoz1972 ahh okay, what about donations through their site?

Ok, meant the newest Unreal. As to the other part I thought you meant migration. Not some Legacy items/titles. I support that.

Zardoz1972 Eh, Unreal 3 is from 2004, so only 3 years younger than AO itself. Also, why would you not be able to have a representation of your AO1 char in a new game? Presumably it would be in the same universe. I said “carry over in a meaningful way”, not migrate. This could take different forms, depending on the new game and its mechanics. Maybe there is the concept of character families, where the old char could be the Patriarch/Matriarch. Maybe the new game has the concept of Elite classes that players need to unlock, and AO veterans get to start with a char with their old name as one of those elite classes. I mean, I’m sure there can be a creative way to introduce some continuity, here.

I am interested in this new zone. It is in the level range of my two main characters. 140 and 174.

The present players are not the target audience. There are like 2 thousand players playing the game. Those players would not want to start over. Most have numerous 220 level characters. A new game has to bring in new players and all the people that left AO over the years. I played to level 174 and left shortly after Shadowlands. Build a new game for new people. The 2000 diehards will not make or break a new game.

No, AO2 would be 100% new. New engine like Unreal 3, etc. New game with new mechanics. So no character migration would be possible.

Etcher The first time I logged in after many years, to see the new engine, I kept asking in chat how I can make sure I’m seeing the new graphics. Everything still looks completely outdated, imho. I heat that it’s just the beginning, but I honestly think, it’s a complete waste of time, at this point.
This game will not entice any new players to join, due to looks alone. The existing player base clearly is ok with the game as is. I’ mean, they’ve stuck around for over 10 years.

Zardoz1972 No, I don’t. But it’s much more likely for funcom to read feedback in their own forums than in the comment section here..
It probably wouldn’t change anything but it would still be nice if people would show their support in the forums. That is not the first thread about a sequel, but the responses are always the same.

Since crowdfunding seems to be the only possibility for a sequel with funcom financial problems, it would just be great for  than 1-2 people to tell them “yes, I would give you money if you choose to do AO2!”

My thought is a moderniced version. With today’s intuitive UI and features. But retaining the Lore and flavor of the original.

Zardoz1972 Additionally, with those particular complaints (I love my AO charts and don’t want to leave them behind), I’m sure there are ways to address that. E.g. Carry over the character in some meaningful way.

The problem is that FC is publicly traded so they can not Kickstarter. BUT, they could spin AO off to a smaller “indie” studio (that they could “advise”). Then Kickstarter it ; )

4 posts against, 4 neutral and 2 supporting. Your basing your opinion that FC should not make AO2 on 10 posts? Go back and look at each AO post here. Then look at the comment section. Most totally support AO2 and it is not by 4 posts. It is by a huge margin. There is support for AO2.

BritoBruno Serrenity What’s weird is that I remember playing this game during beta/launch, and at the time… it was. At least, it was totally in line with other games of the day.

I had a boxed copy with a manual, which of course I devoured before setting foot in-game, and I was able to get up and running without anything that I would have considered at the time to be a lot of fuss.

Then, of course, I hopped back in last year to check out the new engine and didn’t know what the hell any of the keybinds did or what any of the icons were.

Mortam BritoBruno If a AO2 came, and it was userfriendly, i would love to play. But the core original game is too unintuitive for me.

Serrenity I watched a lot of videos, have read a lot of guides, and when is started playing, i got stuck trying to fire my weapon for 5 minutes. It’s really not intuitive by any means.

Nordavind flatline4400 Oh man, the Froob term heh

But yah — need to start a new account.  I started a new account and played around a bit on a Fixer.

Jack Pipsam rioinsignia It could go either way (like most things in life), but I think there’s a lot of opportunity there.  The fact that the game is still going (and at least somewhat profitable) shows the staying power of the game.  I think they could do a TON of business if they upgraded to some of the modern MMO sensibilities. If they do it right, I know it would be successful and god knows I would play the shit out of it :-) and I don’t think I’m alone in that.   Do I think it’ll see WoW numbers?  No, but I think it can be another successful niche game and that would be great.

flatline4400 Unfortunately yes, account types cannot ‘downgrade’. If an account has at any point been a paid account then it’s permanently upgraded and a sub needs to be paid. That said if the account is opened for a month, you can then buy GRACE (basically limited PLEX) in game to keep it going.

The account would have to be legendarily old for it to be classed as a free account. Pre-SL in fact. (Free includes Notum Wars.)

Aw I was going to wait until it’s actual release to Tip this one :D (I don’t actually mind being pipped at the post!)

The Reck is a zone from alpha that got cut due to resource/time constraints as launch day was nearing. It was left incomplete, although the files for it were in the game client and with some… creativity… it was possible to zone into it and wander about. There’s YouTube vids floating around. People have mentioned it for years off and on – why doesn’t FC polish it up, flesh it out and add it as low-hanging fruit new content? And now Michi has done it. Woop for more Rubi-Ka based content! I have some TL4s just itching to go and have a nose about.

rioinsignia show your support on the Forums then. http://forums.anarchy-online.com/showthread.php?615563-AO2-AO-Reloaded-Could-it-work
If I were Funcom and looked at the posts in this thread, I wouldn’t try to make a sequel either..

rioinsignia I am not sure they’d be wise to invest in another MMORPG right now.

Come of Funcom.  This is your own home grown IP.  It’s screaming for a sequel, with a new engine and 2016 graphics.

flatline4400 It’s still like that, but leveling is not nearly as awful as it once was because of the daily missions they put in a while back. Those give a huge shot of XP each day, and the solo missions generally are pretty quick to complete, like 10-20 minutes at most. There are “elite” dailies as well, but you have to find a group for those, which can be either plausible or totally impossible depending on the time of day you play. These days, you could level all the way to 200 (and even 220) just on the dailies if you want. It would take a while in calendar days, but the investment in /played time would be trivial compared to what it used to take when yor only choice was grinding camps and instances for days and weeks.

Nordavind RagnarTheDrunk Although, to be completely clear, the upgrade only touched the core engine and not the assets, which still look like… well, a game from 2001.

Is it still the case that you cant play f2p on an account if you’d actually previously purchased the expansions?  I know my account has been locked for a very long time since I bought Shadowlands and Notum Wars but let the sub expire before f2p, but I haven’t checked in a while.
Otherwise, I’d be tempted but I really don’t want to grind my way up however many hundred+ levels I had done before on a new f2p account…

…You know what game could use a reboot? This game could. I remember it fairly fondly when I was younger but I was a little bit too young to grasp the concepts. I would love to see a modern edition; I always found the classes and world fascinating.

AO was my 1st MMO. It was like being thrown into the deep part of the pool and told to swim. I’d pay hundreds to be a high tier backer if an AO2 could somehow be Kickstarted.

BritoBruno I know the feeling, when I first played in 2001, it was my first MMO and boy was I lost. But I stuck with it and I have to say we had many fun years. AO is unique in many ways and will always be special to me. Now if they made AO2, I might loose part of my life once again :)

Even though the rose-colored glasses are strong enough to keep from doing more than popping in and out, I’m glad they are still working on this. Was such a great game, and it’s awesome that it’s still going.
Also, hows about that sequel?  Kickstarter that and I’ll throw money at you :D

Huh. How about that.

All the best to the team (which is like just two guys now, right?), but for the life of me I just can’t get into this game any more.

Oh man it is a dense game. But so deep and at one point so much fun. I loved everything about the game and I haven’t seen its like since. It was unique and quirky and complicated and magnificent in its obtuseness.
That being said, she hasnt aged well aesthetically and combat feels absolutely glacial compared to the standard today. I would throw so much money at AO2 or even a spiritual successor to the game.
But even I, as much as I loved it, have trouble playing now.

Anarachy Online was the first MMO I ever played…. it was also extremely unfriendly to new players,  I had no idea what i was doing in that game.  It almost completely turned me off to the genre.

It still amazes me that this game is still around.
