R.I.P. PlanetSide

With barely a whisper in memory of its long-running MMOFPS, Daybreak closed down the PlanetSide servers this past weekend.

The studio had previously stated that the sunset was due to "evolving needs and technical requirements" involved with running the 2003-era game. Last year, we had listed it as one of seven MMOs that was operating on borrowed time.

To honor PlanetSide, we have two videos to share after the break. The first is a recording of the final minutes of PlanetSide (language NSFW) made by YouTuber Steven Messner, while the second is the old trailer for the game to hit you right in the feels.

One of the few games that I have played that bestowed a true feeling of camaraderie upon me towards my fellow NC's, friend or stranger. Farewell PS.

I tried to play Planetside 2 these days.

I never met such a demanding game in my entire life.

Ah PlanetSide, you will be missed. My friends and I had many, many fun times indeed.

I played PS1 for a while, and generally enjoyed it.  However, the RNG hit-box concept they implemented just did not sit well with my style of FPS play.  So I quit and never went back.  I cannot say I am especially sad to see PS1 shut down, at least not any more so than any other MMO.  Actually surprised it was left running for so long.  I expect it is mainly due to SOE and similar to why EQ1 was left running.  SOE really had a commitment to their games; Daybreak - not so much.

I logged in to say goodbye to my toons. Not a single other person in my outfit did the same. I had a great time with it for many years and I'm sad to see it go.

I had been planning to log back in, one final time. I redownloaded it and everything, but for whatever reason I didn't get around to it.

It's a real shame.

Sort of tried it once, but back then my internet connection could not cope, sad to see it go and reminds me of the sadness of losing SWG

Is Emmert consolidating devs to work on other projects or just killing off the weak?

A testament to how a game company can have the holy grail of gaming and then deliberately throw out all the good parts to make a crap sequel.

Sometimes customers and players actually *do* know better and companies should listen, rather than trying to be all edgy, cool and new.

@Silvercat18 I played PS1 back then, and also looked in, when PS2 came out. Frankly, apart from the nostalgia, I could not bear to play PS1 anymore. It felt clunky, obviously outdated graphics. IMHO PS2 is a great game and I played >1k hours until I moved on to other games

I played ps2 for a bit, how is the population nowadays?

@Layfon PS2 is doing fine , the recent update with base building has brought back a huge spike in population , its non-stop action at the moment.

I have not played the game in very long, but as soon as I saw the video of the game shutting down and how it used to be etc the feels hit me right in the gut haha. Amazing :)
