Scale walls and cliffs with Conan Exiles’ climbing system

That tall wall or cliff face that in other video games would represent an impassable barrier is nothing more than an adult-sized playground in Conan Exiles.

On Friday, the Conan Exiles dev team showed the first iteration of the game’s climbing system. As it exists in the most recent build, climbing allows characters to jump up and latch on to a vertical surface while doing a Spider-Man all of the way up. Of course, if you don’t watch your stamina, you could find yourself enjoying the existing gravity system with a vengeance. The team said that climbing uses the grit skill as well as a factor in how fast you use your stamina.

The team also posted a written Q&A yesterday on recipe filters, the July rebalancing patch, new effect types, the admin panel, elevators, and splash damage.

I’ll hold off on deciding if climbing is cool or not until I see what defences against climbers they come up with.

As right now I’m torn between yeah its cool and but this now totally invalidates buiilding high up or even having walls at all as a defence.

Kinda cool. At the least it is interesting as a system with a little to it for climbing around!

Thinks about MJ Conan streams, falling from great heights and the death counter feeding a lot. Um after some thought I believe on balance this will be good for the game *evil grin*

So is the climbing system what they’re referencing here?


Maybe. Although, this is Conan. Did they also announce anything about a skill to peel your enemy’s eyeballs? :P

I first saw vertical movement (climbing) in an MMORPG over a decade ago in Everquest 2. As far as I know, it was the first MMORPG to include the ability to climb. Up until then, you either ran up a slope, up a staircase, or clicked something like a ladder to instantly be ported up or down. I never could understand why many MMORPGs that came aftere EQ2 did not include this game mechanic.

Hope they take player/gear weight into account with stamina drain. Like you could scale the cliff instead of fighting your way up the stairs, but you might have to leave your armor behind.

Yeah they say in the stream that armor will affect it as well as equipment like climbing boots. They show it at 56:30
