The Daily Grind: What is the best-designed MMO class you’ve ever played?

There are good MMO classes and bad classes. There are well-designed ones and ones that just never gelled. But every once in a while, you come across a class that clicks on every level and works so well that it goes right to the top of your favorites.

Among the many MMOs I’ve played over the years, only a small handful of classes in these games had that effect on me. City of Heroes’ (well, City of Villains’) Mastermind was one of these, cementing itself as the best pet class I’ve ever tried. And I’ve always been somewhat in awe of Lord of the Rings Online’s Captain, who really nailed a great hybrid build while remaining thematically distinct.

What would you say is the best-designed MMO class you’ve ever played? What about that class put it heads and shoulders above the rest?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

City of Heroes had so many fantastic and varied classes. My Traps/Assault Rifle Defender was pure joy and nearly indestructible. My Fire/Radiation Controller was a monster map clearer. My Claws/Super Reflexes Scrapper was a dream to play solo or teamed. I had so many more classes and power combinations. I miss them all.

Eq1 Beastlord and Bard, Vanguard Bloodmage and Disciple?(forgot the class name, the battle cleric one), WoW Shadow Priest and Shaman healer, Diablo2 skelliemancer. To some degree Warframe Frost, Gw2 Mesmer (illusion), Neverwinter Control Wizard (I read they messed this one up ?) and Cleric.

Probably Elementalist from GW2, followed by Minstrel from LOTRO.

Medic from WildStar. Higher defense than other healers and short-range telegraphs meant I was in the fray, predicting where the enemies would strike and where my allies would run to avoid damage. It felt like I had to be in the middle of combat while remaining cool-headed and thinking one step ahead of everyone. Just like a combat medic, right?

Druid from Everquest : I had become a master of kiting multiple mobs.

Bard from Dark Age of Camelot : PvP castle seiges were so much fun with this class!

DDO”s artifiicer is the most self-reliant class I’ve ever played. Think of a thief with spells who’s also an expert with a crossbow, has a functional pet, and can self heal. I solo’ed two beholders at level 10.

I think you’re confusing “best designed” with “most overpowered”?

FFXI’s SMN class is the pet best class.

Tera’s brawler class is the most fun I’ve had playing a tank.

Tera’s priest has to be the best design for a healer I’ve ever seen and I wonder why nobody has built a healer like it since.

EverQuest’s bard or enchanter imo.

Anarchy Online Agent: Being principally every other class, but either a bit weaker or a bit slower. Could do any role except tanking. Tough to master, but, alas, good times.

Riftstalker from Rift. Still the best damn tank class I ever played.
