The Daily Grind: Are you with or behind the player curve?

There’s one unfortunate fallout to taking an extended leave from an MMO: You quickly fall behind the curve. As patches and expansions and changes roll in, players in the game adapt and conquer while you’ll be playing catch-up if or when you come back.

I’m experiencing this right now in Star Wars: The Old Republic. When I left, my Operative was doing Makeb with the rest of the crowd, but now that I’ve returned, I’m one of approximately six people on this planet while everyone else is Rishi this and Rishi that. I don’t even know what a Rishi is, although I suspect it’s some type of midichlorian pasta maker.

In WOW I’m always ahead of the curve few days after coming back to it. No matter if I had few weeks break or many months. In every other mmorpg I’m behind the curve, and I’m not even trying to catch up. Plus – In WOW I always stick with good guild. In other games I don’t care about guilds and my friend list is always empty :)

I’m always behind the curve as I play MMORPGs for the experience not the XP, so I typically progress very slowly.

So many people behind! I’m with the curve, but only because I like the immersion into one game. I feel conflicted when I’m playing multiple MMOs at the same time. If I would be juggling MMOs, as I think others might be, I surely would fall behind as well.

Always behind. I come back and consume all the content. I was with the curve when WoD launched but the Garrison fun was something I turned into a grind and tedium set in. I’m back in SWTOR with some guildies who rerolled together on Harbinger. I just hit 54 on my Scoundrel. My cohorts are starting their Revan prologues and I am still making my way into Makeb.

I don’t mind it. I have friends that I can play with regardless of level so behind, ahead…who cares.

Always way behind the curve.  These are games, not competitive races.  I laugh at everyone stressing and racing after that stupid, virtual carrot.  I’m the tortoise in the rear, smiling my way along the adventure.

I’m always behind the curve, and deliberately so. I maximise my enjoyment of a game by taking my time, playing at my pace on my own so there’s no competitive need for advancement. I play for the journey rather than the destination, and therefore the developers remain ahead of my curve so far as new content and fixes are concerned. It’s not for everyone, but it’s the only way I’d want to play a MMO these days, and it means I never run out of content or burn out on a game.

Personally, I miss the days when I’d have been forced to pick one game to stay with the curve. I know that may seem strange, but I liken it to one’s spouse. You’d hope they were compelling enough that you wouldn’t need three of them.

I remember very well that in SWG I was well behind. I entered the game after the NGE patch but still had a TON of fun. In WoW I was years behind and in EVE even more. All those games delivered a lot of fun and I had no regrets. Then I started to stay on or AHEAD of the curve with all those early bird/headstart stuff, and strangely the fun was gone. For RIFT, AoC, TR and many more I had beta access but it wasn’t fun because I knew they had to WIPE. On release it wasn’t fun either because I had to repeat storylines and stuff. So everything was ruined and I put a lot of time into it…

Today, I avoid alphas, betas, headstarts, first days even weeks. I go in very very leisurely and take my time, often character creation takes hours because I play around the options and all. I read very slowly, stop to look around, chat with noobs like me and so on. Before I get to “playing” the wave is well ahead of me and I don’t mind strolling behind AT ALL.

This is the same for movies, books, fashion, smartphones, gadgets and whatnot. I kind of walk at my own pace and don’t let me push. This makes me feel much better than before, but I had to RUSH in the first place to get here. I call it experience. :)

Especialy MMOs are not SPRINTS but MARATHONS. So, why rush?

Extremely behind. I don’t tend to rush to level cap, and most MMOs seem to lean their progression on time served, rather than personal skill, so I’m pretty sure I will *always* be behind the curve. 

This is especially true in ‘F2P’ games with P2W mechanics, I just can’t be arsed to shell out cash to give myself better DPS, mitigation or heals, it just feels very wrong to me, and in certain games my principles will eternally cripple me.

ManastuUtakata I totally agree with your analysis. I think if we took a poll, a vast majority of gamers would vote they are behind the curve. I believe those that are ahead are very niche population, I’m gonna wager they are hardcore dungeoneers. 

I do think that developers, do themselves a disservice by stretching the curve to such extremes. Obviously there’s money to be made by maximizing the game’s curve with the least amount of developmental labor.
