BioWare has partnered with e-sports company ESL Gaming to host a competition dubbed Operation Victory. It involves speed-running eight-player story mode operations from Star Wars: The Old Republic’s recent Shadow of Revan expansion, and qualifying heats start next Tuesday, March 3rd.

Prizes include cash, in-game items, and a trip to the Star Wars: Celebration convention. BioWare says that further contest info is forthcoming.

I have a lot of bad things to say about SWTOR’s dev team, but this type of thing should be commended, and faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more prevalent in every game.

PVE e-sport, so it’s a e-sport for mathletes?  Which sounds about as interesting a all the other e-sports out there, but I’m glad they are expanding.

Well, it’s at least interesting to see an MMO attempt to stage a competition around a PvE activity, and something that people already naturally strive to do anyway while playing the game. WoW has a built-in version of something similar in the form of “Challenge Mode” dungeons, where people attempt to speedrun particular instances, with everyone’s gear capped at a certain maximum (relatively low) item level by a special mechanic that applies in those dungeons. There is a realm “leaderboard” in the queue window for it as well, that shows the current time to beat for each instance to be the realm best.

SWTORs strangely become my favorite MMO at the moment. Started my account when it first came out and dropped it just as quick, just came back and found myself entertained now. Hopefully this ups the interest people have in the game, at least its better than focusing on PVP content

Esports for pve? This is pretty cool and perhaps much needed for the mmo space in esports

This will be interesting just to see what group composition is like. If the winners stacked a particular class, maybe Bioware will no longer be able to ignore some of the gross class imbalances.

Is that the distinctive smell of “e-sports” in the air? :-p

I’m still trying to find an Operation group to help my main finish the Oricon questline — all these months after Oricon’s initial release.

That’s the extent of my “raid-level play” in SWTOR.  :-D

And whose idea was it to make the final piece of a PvE planetary story-chain an Operation? Give us a break, hey? And the fact that the Operations are not available in the group-finder queue 24/7 (they rotate during the week, for those who don’t play SWTOR) just makes it even harder to find the 15 other players needed for the Op.

Yes, I’m whinging. Yes, you may mock me for it. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled internet.

Maybe if SWTOR actually had decent raiding. I would be interested in this.
