Crowfall is raking in the big bucks

Crowfall

Crowfall’s Kickstarter campaign is little more than a week old, but that hasn’t stopped the PvP MMO from racking up 10,000-plus backers and over $1 million in crowdfunding. The milestones will enable the hiring of an FX artist and the addition of female centaurs to the game.

The next stretch goal (at $1.3 million) is mounts and caravans, and ArtCraft has also decided to add backer-based rewards. “At 12,000 kickstarter backers, we’re going to give every backer a unique All-Father statue to display proudly in their Eternal Kingdom,” the firm says. “This will let other players know that you were here, and supported Crowfall, from the beginning.”

The hype was too strong with this one, I gave in… and gave them my money. If it wasn’t for the names behind the game, the action combat, the promised flexibility with rulesets, and those dang ol voxels, I would have stayed strong. I would have waited for release, or at least until open beta. But, but the voxels, and the combat, and the centaurs… oh, the centaurs!

I hope I’m not going to regret this.

dirtyklingon Enikuo eLdritchMD I am going solely off of their Kickstarter video, where they said they’d rather work for the players. So, maybe that’s why?

dirtyklingon Enikuo eLdritchMD Okay, so to answer your question – I genuinely don’t know anything about the SEC filing stuff. It just seems like that the lie would be easily revealed if they had investors and say they don’t. I don’t have any money on the game or anything.

That investment from GIGAMEDIA was from 2011.  That money went to develop CSE’s first game March on OZ (which released Nov. 2012).

Not arguing that Kickstarter is the end of funding.  Never did.  I did say Mark didn’t use traditional funding.  Looks like he did and you were right (though I still bet you a majority of that $3 million quoted was Mark’s).  But he couldn’t get that funding without proving the market existed without a successful Kickstarter first, which was the root of our debate.

I agree with you that Kickstarter is not the be all end all of raising capital, especially when it comes to an MMO.  There’s just no way to fund a project of that scope without millions of dollars.  I guess the most important thing to consider is who the devs get in bed with for that funding, and if doing so could contaminate the vision for the game.

dirtyklingon PaganRites Leilonii eLdritchMD DK, I’m pretty sure think most of that money was Mark’s, and maybe Andrew Meggs, his partner on CU.  He stated during Kickstarter he was putting in that money.

dirtyklingon PaganRites Leilonii I’m not arguing the merits of Crowfall.  It could turn out to be a POS.

I was replying to your statement “if the devs want to make yet another corpse loot pvp game, there’s nothing wrong with that really, except there’s been no shortage of them”.  My point is that there is no corpse loot PvP game on the market worth playing, that’s why Crowfall funded in 4 days.
