The Daily Grind: What’s the oldest MMO you’ve ever played?

I read yesterday’s news about Meridian 59 with interest because it’s one of the few genre titles that was before my time. My MMO obsession began in Ultima Online circa 1997, which was a year or so after M59’s commercial launch. I’ve always meant to check out the latter, though, and now I’ve got even more motivation to do so since it’s receiving updates from its open source community.

What about you, MOP readers? What’s the oldest MMORPG you’ve ever played?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

The first MMO that got me addicted was Ultima Online when it was still in beta in ’96.

I dabbled in some MUDs/MUSHes, but my first MMO to actually play with any regularity (which is an understatement) would be EverQuest, in March 1999. A test-character Barbarian on the Tunare server, then in April hubby & I decided to ‘play some evils’ and started Dark Elves on Erollisi Marr.

I’ve been hooked on MMOs ever since.

I got an install CD in a PC magazine.  The EQ server we played wasn’t the normal EQ live server, but a special PC magazine promo server.  When I decided I wanted to continue playing, I switched my account to live servers, paid my monthly sub and never looked back.  I stayed in EQ till Oct 2010, which is when the expansion House of Thule was released.  By then all the friends I made in EQ moved to different games so I finally decided to hang up my epic shield and morning star.
Now I drift from one new game to another chasing ghosts of the past, trying to find the awe, wonder and fun I felt when I first played EQ.
I’m still searching.

So, no one remembers the original NeverWinter Nights back on
AOL?I’m not sure that a hard player
limit of 512 lets it count as ‘massive’ but it was a lot of fun.The main problem was this was back in the
days when you had to pay for AOL based on how long you were connected to
it.I remember playing NWN and getting a
$300 AOL bill.
Nobody?
Then everyone get off my lawn! :)
After that the first MMO I played was City of Heroes.

A MUD called Mortal Realms was my first “MMO”. Back in 1993.
The first MMO I played that didn’t use ascii for graphics was Ultima, but I didn’t get all that engrossed in it, and the MUD I was playing at the time, Medievia, continued to be my main gaming focus.
In 1999, Everquest managed to pull me in enough that I started splitting my time equally between it and Medievia.
In 2001, Anarchy Online enthralled me to such an extent that I finally left MUDs behind, and became a full time graphical MMOer.

Played a bit of UO before getting completely addicted to Asheron’s Call.

.Hell I ended up back with AC 14 years later after trying scores of MMO’s.
