Elder Scrolls Online console versions getting ‘quick chat’ instead of text chat

Elder Scrolls Online probably won’t have text chat functionality when it launches on consoles. We say “probably” because ZeniMax has sent mixed signals on this particular issue, as chronicled in a news blurb at Eurogamer.

The latest update comes from game director Matt Firor, who told the website that proximity voice chat is the name of the game at the moment. “As with a lot of console multiplayer games, player-to-player communication in ESOTU is based around voice chat. That being said, we are looking into implementing a quick chat system, and when we have more news to share, we’ll let you know,” he said.

A_Dad Supreme  you want and aplaud the realisme of a school hallway in a fantasy MMO?
That sounds so bad and unactractive to me on so many levels.

Go RP with voice chat on. see how that works out for the RP’ers >:)

What a load of crap.  i ran a 300 man guild for years in a big mmo that started out with a 10 man limit on the TS server that needed to be upgraded to 40. The TS server was always mostly filled on days were there were not even events like big raids going on. I had boys, girls gay guys and gay girls in there and all of different countries and ofcourse hetero’s. in short everything the world population has to offer.
They did not need any extra protection from anyone and could partake and were respected by everyone. sure there were a few homophobics that came around but even most of them ended up socialzing with all the gay people etc.
the woman ceretaintly never need any special care (even tho a few passed by over the years demanding it for no reason other then for having a vagina and being used to desperate boys online who gave them items and help whenever they snapped their fingers but those type of “Princesses” didn last long in my guild anyway)

If the gay guys or girls or regular girls had a problem with someone it was usually not because they were gay or a girl in the first place, in other words, no different from anyone else.

Pushing this idea so suggestiveley that these 2 groups are in desperate need of protecting is pathetic.

Quick chat is awesome. Limits harassment, streamlines communication, and gives people without a keyboard an easy way to avoid voice chat (if they want). Although I’m not sure I’d want it instead of normal support. Why not both?

Loyheta Indeed :) My scenario was mostly to help women/gay people and generally people that play the opposite gender..It definitely cannot stop the trolls

Rohirrim That would help, no doubt. Then again they would just use some goofy modularization to run around going huhuehuehuehuehuehue. Guess you really can’t stop people from being trolls xD

Cyberlight Loyheta I imagine a vast majority of the toxic people would fall under that… maybe we should drop it down to 25 so I can use it xD (28). Then again you have people stressed out from work/children…
Also.. think of the RPers that are being shunned with this ( I don’t mind the ERPers getting shunned but I guess I’m just bigoted haha)

I have much the same feeling about this as I do with instanced content. I bring my own chat. I’ve never felt that it’s the job of the game to provide it. In fact, 99~ per cent of the time, my chat is hidden in every MMO I play. I bring my own — via Skype. And Skype provides a much better quality of voice and usually (surprisingly) at a much lower latency than what any game offers. The upside of this is that I don’t have children and excitable extroverts screaming in my head, which is something that I can’t imagine I would ever want. I would prefer going deaf.

Text chat is necessary for those few moments where you absolutely do need to communicate (such as arranging a lycanthropic upgrade), but in most cases I’d just rather not. With text chat, I can just hide it away and forget about it. I’m actually really glad that the userbase is split, too. The consoles might’ve otherwise brought in an influx of extroverted players to harass me visually, even if they can’t via voice, so that’s good. And the move to console also being one way, I believe, and not copying? A good choice, a very good choice.

Console users can have what makes them happy. I’m a PC gamer by and large because I’m not an extrovert. Sitting on a couch with my eyes being melted by the radiation of a screen turned up too high, my ears turning into a choir of tinnitus thanks to an ‘entertainment system’ being so loud it’s more vibration than noise, and all that rot? Not my idea of fun. While I’m sure it’s someone’s idea of fun, I don’t particularly share that. Good for them if it’s what they want, so long as it doesn’t hurt me or mine, I’m fine with it.

So voice chat is actually more common now on consoles than on PC? How the mighty have fallen…

yes ESO needs a text chat for tradeing, for grouping with peapole who dont want to use voice, for pepole on the EU servers who dont want to listen to peapole speaking 5 diffrent languages at the same time, for peapole who are deaf or mute, for peapole who might bean in accidents and maybe damge their speaking ability.. i dont get why peapole are arguing against zenimax adding this not replacing the voice chat. just adding another option.. that just sems selfish to me. its like a new resturant opens and at the opening night we all have bean promised cake and ice cream 50% like cake 50% like ice cream and then a weak before they opening they annonce we are only serving cake, if i hapend to only like cake i wouldent argue against thoese who want ice-cream… idont know i dont claim to not be selfish but this goes a bit over the line for me.

A_Dad Supreme SwobyJ Actually when I played ESO I easily joined with others and if I more regularly played, these would be contacts that I’d level with. I’m an introvert shy guy but no matter the setting, I butterfly around, including in MMOs.
