Notch: ‘F2P is bait and switch and should be illegal’

Well, there’s at least one game developer who hasn’t sold his soul to F2P. That would be Markus “Notch” Persson, otherwise known as the creator of the best-selling PC game of all time (Minecraft) and lesser known for his early involvement with MMO sandbox Wurm Online.

Persson, responding to a troll tweet from Duke Nukem 3D developer George Broussard that equated anti-F2P sentiments with elitism, didn’t mince words.

“Fu[n]k that noise,” Persson tweeted. “Free-to-play is bait and switch and should be illegal.”

So says the guy famous for making a B2P game, adding a subscription multiplayer-server model, and then selling the whole thing (down the river) to Microsoft.

It’s not bait and switch.  But the F2P model is killing mmos, at least for me.  I have almost no interest in mmos of any kind, because I almost never spend money in the stores, and I’m competing with obsessive people who max out their credit cards in the stores (World of Tanks comes to mind as being almost completely noncompetitive if you try to grind in F2P mode).

annoyedbadger jefreahard Styopa I am (for the most part) alright with however my character looks and call it good. Even so, I would prefer a sub game if it would include everything like they used to (even if that sub was $25 – $30).
I think the chopping up of skins / titles that has become this common has actually contributed significantly to my apathy for them. I would *love* to just pay for a game and get the whole game. Yes, considering my style of play it would actually cost me more, but I would feel much better about it because I know that everything was available. At that point, I may also care about aesthetics again too.
I know that few (if any) games currently have an all-inclusive sub, but I would like to see that return as an option. I think each type of game should have its place, but the scales are currently weighted against that.

Kageokami, oTQ It’s much worse when a game (read ArcheAge) not only charges you a full sub to play realistically but then milks you for all the extras f2p games charge for like inventory slots and character slots for every single character. And that’s not even starting on the p2w stuff.

I have too agree with Notch.  I don’t see why people don’t see that they actually end up spending more on an F2P title than they do for the price of a sub for a year.  That said,  I can’t blame the industry for adopting this model because as David Hannum said of PT Barnum form of showmanship “There’s a sucker born every minute”. ;)

Remember when the coolest looking stuff in MMOs were things other players made or earned by doing really difficult or time consuming things?

I feel like these days when I play an MMO, I’m given a choice to pay 10 dollars and get the best looking gear or actually play the game and be good at it and get something that looks like dook.

Cosmetic items are becoming the new definition of p2w imo and lots of people seem to be okay with it cause it doesn’t make you more powerful.

jefreahard Styopa But above you say you can choose to sub or not…so you are apparently capably of using your discretion.
Because you have no impulse control (or sense of hypocrisy it seams), does not mean that a normal person has to buy everything.
If you are saying you HAVE to buy everything, then I’ll say you HAVE to remain subbed and buy everything the cash shop in sub games….
Sorry, you position is absurd, you see things in black and white and use hyperbole and absurdity in the place of real agreements. You also resort to insults and personal attacks.
