Wurm Online database error breaks loyalty program

A database error and subsequent attempts to fix it have left Wurm Online’s loyalty program in a state of disrepair.

Lead Developer Rolf Janssen admits that his attempts to set right the problem led to the database losing information on premium accounts and their associated rewards such as spyglasses. Some players failed to receive their monthly gifts, while others got extra.

Janssen said that he’s always considered premium rewards a “side bonus” for subscribers but not part of the paid package. “I took the decision that we move on now with this loss as the awards have been handed out for almost all current premium accounts and it should work in the future,” he concluded. “Since we no longer have the aggregated payment data available we can’t offer reimbursements for new cases after I close this thread.”

Thing is, most of the dedicated Wurm players by now know the drill. Rolf does things by the seat of his pants, and the company as a whole only has a handful of employees. That said, no other game in existence can provide the kind of experience that Wurm can, so we take the risk and stick around. Overall it’s worth it – a missed yellow potion (which just turns you into another character model for a while) is nothing in the big scheme of things.

bdew tweet_unit Anonymous tip, your name bitching all over it, posting the link and defending it twice on the forums.
I only see one person having a tantrum over this, and its you, so yeah, it’s pretty obvious you’re the one trying to make it like a big deal simply because you haven;t had your diaper changed.
as was said elsewhere, a PARTIAL restore of a backup would lead to a lot of inconsistancies, and for something as unimportant as a few players premium counts, (not the player account, not the fact they have premium, but the counter of how long theyve had it for) it was decided not to be worth it.
if a failure caused actual character data, or important information to be lost, im pretty sure rolf would move heaven and earth to reinstate it.
but no, you sit there and tell yourself that youre right, your rage is righteous and valiant, the people of the world must know how much you can twist a fact!

tweet_unit bdew In fact i am. I can buy hours to restore, maybe, not multiple weeks of work like Rolf claimed.

“trying so hard to deface it, or making it shitty for other players”… Dude, i just posted a few comments on an article. Overreaction much?
I also don’t see how i’m “defacing” anything. You might want to check the meaning of that word.

bdew And you’re a dev or dba? On our least busy betting systems, niche and local to a little african country we serve, a backup and restore can take hours. Have you contemplated the complexity and referential integry/relations and implications of a simple map on wurm? You should consider leaving the game, and playing something that suites you, instead of trying so hard to deface it, or making it shitty for other players (the majority, which do not post and cry like babies on the forums). At the end, you’re accomplishing nothing. Go take your anger out on your banjo.

“I tried to restore the data but restoring portions of the database like
that messes things up and we risked losing even more data instead and
lots of database inconsistency. The people affected are almost only
those who not yet have repremmed.”
so your alliance members werent prem anyways?

kayvaan_shrike bdew I have at least 2 people in my alliance that are missing spyglasses.

Restoring a database backup takes seconds to minutes. The fact that it would “far too time consuming” means there isn’t one.

kayvaan_shrike Indeed. I trust in Rolf, have for years, he has no evil bone in his body. And I love wurm. This article is probably by one of the whining babies from the forums there
