Here’s a shocker: Hellgate is shutting down (again)

Raise your hand if you’re surprised that the latest version of Hellgate is closing down. OK, smartasses in the back row, put ’em down, because absolutely no one is shocked that Hellgate Global failed to make money.

It’s kind of old news at this point, too, since the closure post on the T3Fun forums is dated October 20th, 2015. But hey, it was new to me so I figured there might be a couple of you who care. The game’s cash shop has already gone dark, while the service itself will take a final bow on December 31st, 2015.

The original Hellgate: London ARPG released way back in 2007(!), and since then the property has changed company hands, continents, and business models numerous times in an effort to stave off the inevitable.

KiwiRed I doubt it would happen. This is the second shutdown for Hellgate. I was a tester for both Flagship and T3. The game had promise. I was also a tester for Mythos. When it was originally shutdown with Hellgate it was in alpha. The t3 version of mythos shut down a couple of years ago. Hanbitsoft gave it a few years of extra life.  So lets be thankful for that.

It was a fun game (which I originally bought a month before it originally shut down). Be nice if they were to sell it all to an actual dev who can do something with it.

JamesCrow “so why it was cancelled for the first time?”

So much more to it than that. Blue screens just playing the game, constantly. People getting the things that lifetime people should have, but the lifetimers didn’t get. etc. The code was a mess. I was there from the start, bought CE, lifetime, etc. Loved the aesthetics of the game, and as a mindless action game it was decent, but the company coasted on the good will of the “made by people who made Diablo!”

One of the best things about the game though, it came with single player offline baked in. I feel more MMOs or diablo types should have that too, then you don’t have just a coaster afterwards. :P
