The Daily Grind: Which multiplayer game do you wish were a full-blown MMORPG?

It probably has not slipped your attention that we cover more than just MMORPGs here on Massively OP these days. There’s a lot of crossover and connection between those and other types of online games, and much of our audience is interested in both. But our primary love is and always has been for the massively multiplayer RPGs.

That is why I am always a little disappointed when promising upcoming games decide to play it safer with a more limited multiplayer route than to go full-bore MMO. Titles like Monster Hunter World, State of Decay 2, or Sea of Thieves are exciting in their own right, but I can’t help but think that they would have been so much better as real MMORPGs.

Which multiplayer game or games do you wish would graduate to the MMORPG level? Past, present, or future titles are all open for discussion!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Without a doubt, without question – Borderlands.

I know that another company licensed the name to make a quasi Borderlands MMO in China but it’s been described as a giant turd and is Borderlands in licensed name only. I mean a real full Borderlands MMO done right by Gearbox for Western countries. I’d love that and put so many hundreds of hours into it.

Some kind of dungeon keeper (underground builder/rts) but more 3D instead of one underground plane COMBINED with mmo mechanics, aka openish world for adventure, playng as a character actively fighting but at the same time like a general issuing orders to your minions (levels, gear etc applies to both). Spiced with “town” defence against ai or players, alliances, rvr, factions. Point is you play everything as a character instead of the typical rts god-mode – A character point of view controlled mmo-rts-builder hybrid.

Diablo. The hack & slash gameplay combined with a fully-fleshed out MMO world with exploration and lore would be chocolate-covered crack with sprinkles on top.

Isn’t Monster Hunter just the fun parts of raiding with all the cruft and fuss cut away?

Aside from that, I can’t muster much opinion on this. Non-massive multiplayer games tend to be PvP, and I don’t enjoy PvP.

Saints Row? That had co-op, didn’t it?

Monster Hunter even has the shitty drop rates for items that you need for crafting!
