The Daily Grind: How do you choose your character’s mounts in an MMO?

Ride something.

Sometimes, the choice of mount in an MMO is limited by functionality. If I want to cart someone around in Final Fantasy XIV, I need to use a two-seat mount. There are many environmental obstacles in Guild Wars 2 that require specific mounts to bypass. And you could argue that your “mount” in EVE Online is kind of what determines your character abilities at any given moment, so you have to take that into consideration.

But there are times when you could be riding (or flying) anything, and you still have to choose. So what do you pick? Do you go with something specific to a given character? The rarest mount? The most expensive mount? The one that looks the goofiest? Or do you just abuse any “random mount” button with joy? Tell us, dear readers; how do you choose your character’s mounts in an MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Best stats are the first criteria.

After that, just pick whatever fits with my character and is lore appropriate. I tend not to like mounts so I spend as little time as possible on them, they’re basically just a speed buff for me.

Something that matches the personality of the character.

In HotS, I color coordinate between the player skin and mount.

#1 How cool I think it is

#2 How much grind is associated with obtaining the mount. Cost can factor in too, with store mounts, but grinding for mounts really annoys me. Have I mentioned that I hate grind?

Hmm. There is no real process for me.

Some I like because they fit my class and my understanding of who my toon is.
Some I like because they are just cool or rare, hopefully both, but not always.
Some I like because they are functionally better, faster, no knock off etc.
And finally, some I like because they are just so ridiculous. Lol.

Everytime I ride my Bantha in SWTOR I smile. It seems so ridiculous that I would be riding around in a Bantha on Hoth, not to mention the fleet. Or better yet when I’m rushing into battle which used to happen on occasion. Everyone shows up in there swanky mounts, tanks, speeders etc. I waddle in on my Bantha. LOL.

In LotRO, I won the cave-claw mount the first time I set foot in the Treasure Hunt. It’s a store quality fast mount, but man is it ugly. I rode it for years, because it was fast, and cheap.

Interesting question..for me i only picked a mount in wow for flying. Every other mount i just got from whatever game i was playing. Never cared to much for what a mount looked like or was. The game i have the most mounts in is Rift and they all were give away’s/login rewards.

My first choice is to have the mount relatively fit the theme of the character. After that, i tend to pick something that is either “unique” (or at least uncommon), or something retro that has been outgrown by majority of population.

Whichever one they would look the coolest riding, based on race/class.

Usually something befitting of my ego or my current mood. Or whatever is thematic for that character. Or Squirrels in the case of rift.

I tend to like roleplay mounts.
My very modest and sneaky Thief in GW2 uses a simple, sand colored raptor.
My metalhead of a charr can’t wait for the dirty motorbike.
My dwarf in WoW used the old brewfest ram.

On the other hand… what’s better than the most gaudy, noisy and immersion breaking mount you can get your hands on?
The more annoying the better; there’s a certain charm to being “that character” barging in on erotic roleplayers with a police car.
