The Daily Grind: What animals would you like to see more of in MMOs?

They exist.

This probably will not surprise anyone reading this, but I really like animals. But I still get a bit depressed at the fact that most MMOs feature more or less the same subset of animals over and over. Bears, wolves, cats, some sort of rodent, a few ungulates, birds… it’s all pulling from the same basic template, and you know that you’re always going to wind up fighting some bears so the real question is what sort of bears there will be.

This is depressing solely because, well… look at pangolins. These armored little sweethearts feel like fantastical creatures and yet they’re real. Why don’t we see more things based on deep-sea isopods? Why not gharials? Whip scorpions (sure, they’re not actual harmful, but neither are 99% of scorpions or spiders)? Leeches? Lampreys? Manuls? The list goes on. I’m not even hitting highlights, these are just animals that pop into my mind off the top of my head.

Sure, it isn’t a huge deal, but I’d love to see all of the above turn up in MMOs on a regular basis. But what about you, dear readers? What animals would you like to see more of in MMOs?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Just give me smarter animals. Humans are one of their natural predators, they need to hide, run and ambush them humans. Make it more of a challenge.

I think generally speaking mmos haven’t figured out underwater biomes as a fun and engaging place to game. Almost every underwater animal like vampire squids and orcas.

Also tapirs.

Land of the Giants MMORPG anyone?

We’d be small in an otherwise real world. They could put every type of animal that exists in it, though many of them would suddenly be trying to eat and kill us. Many others would be passive unless we attacked them.

Yes, we’d still have to deal with spiders and scorpions, but we’d have to deal with every other type of insect and animal as well.

I’m personally sick of seeing spiders, scorpions, and such that MMO’s love to trot out as “terrifying”. Give me a mutant herd of rabbits. Maybe even a wild gerbil/raccoon hybrid boss? A walking sting ray? Anything other than the same stale relics of early MMO enemy playbook.

Of course the spiders and scorpions are always giant. They could put in giant mice that still look like mice, just increased in size – or as you mentioned, hamsters. A house cat looking cat that was giant sized (though I’d feel bad and guilty fighting it, it would be cool to see it).

I’m not really scared of spiders at all. I don’t like ants. Seeing giant ants really would scare me a lot. I’m sure games have them, usually they’re only about the size of dogs in the games I play though. I’d like to see actual giant ones towering over us.

How about a whole MMORPG where we’re in the normal world but have been shrunk down. Every bug and mammal that we’re used to is suddenly an enemy. Hey that gives me an idea for a new post :D

I can dig giant crabs. But give them something unique like a mutant arm or eye or a rocket whip for a leg.
