Ominous!

Anyone who knows me also knows that I really love City of Heroes. It’s a great game and for a long time it was a great way to introduce players to MMOs in a very open and low-cost way. But these days… well, while I don’t exactly think the Homecoming servers are in any particular danger, I don’t feel totally comfortable recommending the title to new players for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that the game is much more visibly dated and the community far more insular.

This isn’t to say the game is bad, just that I am at this point reluctant to tell someone who has not played the game to try it now. And I think we all have a game or two like that, titles that may be really great but are inaccessible for new players either due to barriers of community, mechanics, or simple playstyle. So what about you, dear readers? Are there MMOs you enjoy that aren’t worth starting new in 2020?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
