Lord of the Rings Online re-activates character transfers

It has been a good long while since Lord of the Rings Online players were able to transfer characters between servers. In fact, for a while there, it was easier to walk into Mordor than switch realms (pause for polite laughter)!

Anyway, Standing Stone Games announced this week that character transfers are back on for those looking to pull up stakes and strike out for a new land. The cost of a transfer is pricey, however: 2495 LOTRO Points, which is roughly equivalent to $25. The exception here is for the legendary Ithil server, which can Red Rover its toons over to its sister Anor server for free.

The studio clarified what’s going on with Ithil: “Ithil’s population is significantly lower than Anor’s, as folks well know, so we are listening to those who have asked us to be able to bring their characters to the more populated world. There is not an announcement to be made at this time about plans for Ithil. We’ll see what the community wants to do about Ithil, given an option to transfer to Anor, and use that information to help inform future decision-making.”

SSG said that character transfers are restricted to region (i.e., only US to US servers, not US to European) and that no characters on closed servers can make the switch (although that’s coming).

Admit it I’m not the only one who went into a Sean Bean voice reading “walk into mordor” in first paragraph than in same voice said “one does not simply transfer servers”

It should be noted that there is a pretty big change in the transfer costs. Now it also costs to just transfer shared items.

That was not the case before and, because the LOTRO database is the LOTRO database, led to people being able to go over currency limits on some items.

There was plenty of speculation that this exploit was one of the reasons the transfers were down so long. There is no proof that it had anything to do with the delays, but obviously it was something SSG was looking at, too.

Only for non subs though

I did not read anything like that in the original announcement. Is it a change they made after?

Edit: Still don’t see anything that says it is still free to transfer shared items for VIP accounts. I mean, that would be a great thing for them to do and would add more value to VIP, but I’m not sure where you see that.

From that page:

The cost to transfer a character or shared items is as follows:

* Character Transfer: 2495 LOTRO Points
* Shared Items Transfer: 495 LOTRO Points (free with a character transfer, only at the time of the character transfer)

Nothing mentioned about VIP vs. non-VIP there; it seems that the extra cost is only if you’re not paying for a character transfer.

Ithil IS pretty quiet at times, and this aint helping. If the guild wants to transfer, Id go.

Personally I’d have gone with “Looks like character transfers are back on the menu, boys!”
