Nordic-themed MMO Odin: Valhalla Rising gets a publishing deal with Kakao Games and a gameplay trailer

You’ll never guess the setting for the upcoming MMORPG Odin: Valhalla Rising. Admittedly, it couldn’t be more on the nose unless it were called Muninn’s Mead Adventure or This Game Will Have Vikings In It. Be that as it may, the Norse mythology-themed MMORPG from the Korean studio Lionheart Studio is starting to make waves with a new gameplay trailer and a publishing deal.

Kakao Games has officially taken up publishing duty for the MMORPG, with plans to have it arrive first in its native South Korea. Reports don’t indicate any plans for a global release, but considering Kakao’s history, it seems like it’s a question of “when” instead of “if.” As for the game itself, it’s being developed for PC and mobile devices, touting a UE4-powered world of humans, demons, and gods at war. Players will reportedly be able to visit locations like Midgard, Jotunheim, Niflheim, and Alfheim, and the game will feature a seamless open world.

Lionheart Studio released a new gameplay trailer full of all of the mythical beasties, flashy fighting, and Vikings speaking fluent Korean you can handle (which is no weirder than Vikings speaking fluent English, to be fair). You can watch that after the cut.

This about as goofy as those Hong Kong “1930 american gangster” movies.

Does this use BDO’s engine?

Why the constant onslaught of nonvocal grunts and groans in every single eastern MMO? I find it obtrusive and grating. Am I wrong? Is it an anime thing or am I just old and out of touch? (please insert a loud “Aughngh!” between each sentence)

Aughngh!

Noises in physical combat have always been overrepresented in entertainment media. Grunts make complete sense. Though some of the shouts here are definitely the Asian based “add power to your attack by shouting” type.

Anyway, it could be worse, the game could be full of young girl panty shots :P Sigh…

Something that gets to me and is way too overrepresented in anime and things based on anime is stuttering. Once you start to notice it, it’s so hard to stop seeing it everywhere in anime.

I am going to bet we see more development with games on all devices as the years pass by. UR4 is definitely set up for that. The games art looks good. But what are we looking at for playtime, end game, grind, market, etc. To soon to tell. I like how new games and publishing deals are posted on the site.

That’s me out.

Don’t be mean. I’m sure this will be the most beautiful cut scene with microtransactions yet!

Well you may as well check out permanently. That’s the future, like it or not.

Whilst mobile games aren’t going anywhere, I find it unlikely that all games will be developed to run on mobile devices.

But yeh, if it does reach that point, I’ll probably check out.

Where you expecting to to be out on Xbox One? O.o

Na, its the mobile device I have a problem with. It means that either the devs are wasting time developing essentially separate games for both platforms, or more likely, they’re designing the game to run well on mobile devices, which means the gameplay experience on PC will be bad and likely very shallow.

About the only thing it has in common with Vikings is swords and fur – that’s where it stops.

Yeah looks like viking themed Black Desert Online which is sad but still could be fun gameplay depending on the mechanics.

The trailer looks pretty good. I enjoy themes like this and it reminds me a little bit of Age of Conan. The worrying thing I saw was the brief pieces of female characters charging headlong into frigid battle with their male compatriots wearing high heels and short skirts. That crap just kills immersion so hard. I’m tired of seeing male and female characters treated so differently in games.

Not that bad looking beyond the few anachronistically clothed females in the end – and the fact that they and one another female earlier were pretty cartoonish compared to other human characters.

Well, the guy climbing the mountainside in full gear, without ropes was unintentionally hilarious in its own way, but otherwise… It doesn’t look that bad. Some areas looked pretty atmospheric.

Just looks like another “Generic asian fantasy mmo #624363573” to me. Elves/dwarves, scantly clad short asian women throwing fireballs and chain lightning. All it was missing to be 100% asain themed was a small talking anime fantasy creature, and swords 2x as large as the person wielding them.

Absolutely ZERO interest in another one of these games.

If i hadn’t seen the article title i would’ve thought it was just a Black Desert patch, it looks identical.

That’s what I was thinking, even the animations look ripped off from it.

Yeah, I never realized that Scandinavia was full of Asians. (Women, at least. Some of the men managed to look vaguely European/Nordic.)
