The Daily Grind: Which MMO antagonists do you still fondly remember?

Bork.

For some reason, even in the earlier years of World of Warcraft, my favorite antagonists were never the big villains that were supposedly built up over the course of the expansion. I didn’t really care much about Kel’thuzad or Illidan or even Arthas as a personal enemy. But Arugal, the guy who wanted a whole house full of dogs? Mekgineer Thermaplugg? The almost heartbreaking fight against Keristrasza in the Nexus? Those stick with me pretty resolutely.

Of course, you can never be sure which antagonists will resonate with players. I certainly was supposed to want to beat up Nemesis and the Clockwork King in City of Heroes, and that’s exactly what happened. I definitely connected with Nidhogg, Emet-Selch, and Vauthry as antagonists in Final Fantasy XIV. And we cannot forget the most memorable of all antagonists, of course, the dreaded Lord British in Ultima Online. (He was supposed to be an antagonist, right? Pretty sure I’m right.) So which MMO antagonists do you still fondly remember, whether or not they were supposed to be particularly important?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Lucan D’Lere for sure. Hearing his statue “talk” for the first time in Christopher Lee’s voice was pretty cool. What a shame EQ2 fell so far :(

Regulos and Jakob the undead guy from Rift, because they were both so lazy and cheesy my husband and I made them a running joke about being discount brand villains for budget MMOs.

Arthas of course.

Just from running it so many times, Frostfire in CoH. I loved running that, and that office building filled with ice.

Gaius van Baeslar from XIV had some really great interactions and motivations and was a treat to see in action. The fact that he was voiced by Richard Epcar helped, too.

It might be a less appreciated villain for most, but I really liked the classic “asshole-that-stole-my-ship” Skavak from SWTOR. To the point where I haven’t played the Smug storyline in years but was still able to remember his name.

Phinagel Autropos (EverQuest)
“Fondly” remember is a stretch for Phinny. But the trauma over camping, finding a group and racing other guilds to kill him in the middle of the night for weeks on end to get that stupid crystal staff for my wizard epic… /eye twitch/
But I was so proud and so happy when I finally did it and got my epic. So, I hate this cretin. But I have a lot of nostalgia over the whole thing.

Fippy Darkpaw (EverQuest)
Memorable. Stubborn. Stupid. Dependable.
I love him! :D

The Caretaker (Wildstar)
Sometimes helpful, often antagonistic – mostly just mad and always entertaining. I loved the Caretaker and his role in the narrative of the Wildstar story line.

Millhouse Manastorm (World of Warcraft)
I have never wanted to kick a gnome like a football as much as I did Millhouse. But I also love it when he pops up in a story. Because I love wanting to kick him.

Palawa Joko (Guild Wars 2)
Smug jerk. But a great villain that you love to hate. I wish he stuck around to be the BBEG for longer than he did rather than switching back to “oh no…another dragon threat…”.

Fippy Darkpaw. Seriously. Was the only name for me that came up immediately :p

He might not have been the most successful villain but boy was he ever persistent.

I hate to ruin the vibe, but the ones that stick with me are the villains who had bullshit tactics. I’m looking at you, Queen Gwarthlea, with your insane adds who had to be CC’ed, despite nail-bitingly tough resistances.

It doesn’t help that there were only 2 classes out of the whole lot who could make that fight possible, and I was the only active one in the guild at the time. I did that fight a lot. And people (who weren’t me) screwed it up an equally lot.

Anyway, fondly is a stretch, but it sure made “be careful what you wish for” a thing. Oh, they wanted me all right. Haha…

Baron Wylon Montclair of Rivenspire in ESO, here’s a guy that just wanted to save his dying wife and wound up damning his whole family while engulfing a whole region into a bloody civil war.
