The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite April Fools’ day MMO gag?

ARAT

This year, we have elected not to do an April Fools’ joke because we found ourselves with something more pressing to do. It turns out that copyright crackdowns in various places such as Twitch have become super aggressive, so from this point onward we’ll be using gorgeous in-house artwork for our header images for all of our news posts.

Why are you all looking at me like that? No, none of these will be available as NFTs. Who would even do such a thing? That’s not even a funny joke. This is very serious.

Fortunately, we’re definitely going to see MMORPG studios doing something silly all day long, and so today we’re curious about your favorite gaming gags this year, or even the company whose jokes you’re looking forward to the most. Let us know that down in the comments. Also, let our team of professional in-house artists know how much you’re enjoying their work. Also, eat a bagel. Mm, delicious bagels.

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

This year’s April Fools gag for EVE Online is probably too obscure for many to appreciate. But on April 1, 2017, developer CCP introduced the Upwell Organic Mass Granulator, which purportedly reprocessed the frozen corpses of defeated pilots into chemical compounds which could be further refined into performance-enhancing drugs.

Yikes.

It wasn’t the most in-depth or complex joke, but FFXIV’s official tweet about removing the invasive Catboy species from the game this morning hit a personal note that got a really good chuckle out of me.

Please don’t forget to neuter your Catboy.

Artisanal sounds from STO.

Not quite a gag, but one April Fools / Easter many years ago, Turbine allowed chicken players into the Ettenmoors. A bunch of level 1 chickens with like 30 hp put into the PvP zone! Awesome fun :-)

Sorry. This isn’t one of my favorite holidays. Especially since it seems like quite often a news site (not this one, like TV news) will completely fail to notice the date, and go absolutely berserk over something that’s clearly too stupid to be real. :(

My favorite to this day was the City of Heroes 2008 April Fools Day of:

Simply because at the time many plyers (myself included) were like: “Where’s the joke? This feature (if togglable for those who don’t want it) would have been AWESOME!”

I liked all the giant cats in GW2.

The GW Commando missions and GW2’s Super Adventure Box.

Rather than just a 1 day gag or just some annoyance, these added actual content to the game. Silly content, sure, but they really put the work in on it.

I actually really wish the Commando to be a class or at least a elite spec for Warriors.

Isn’t that the Dead Eye for Thief’s?

Deadeye is just a glorified stealth sniper. Commandos in general are demolitionists, heavy weapon specialists and are squad based.

They use what would be the equivalent of heavy armor, and are pretty Warrior-like. Specially considering that the GW2 Warrior is a fighter that has skill, training and expertise with weaponry. They behave a lot like a soldier. Fits to a T.

It has to be Star Trek Online’s “Artisanal Sound System” update.

Essentially, all in game sfx replaced with staff saying “pew pew pew” “woosh” and such. Its even fairly easy to turn off if it gets too annoying,

But it did make me giggle when my cannons firing were accompanied by “pewpewpewpewpew”

Speaking of STAR TREK ONLINE, have you seen this year’s April Fool’s joke? They just tweeted it. 🚀🤖❤️🤣🤣🤣🖖

The “Artisanal Sound System” of STO is a good one to be sure; and every year they usually re-activate it for April Fools, and I always turn it on, then after 5 minutes, turn it off again. ;)

For me the most insane April Fools joke Cryptic did for STO was when they made the Test server a rollback to the ORGINAL launch version of STO and ran that for a few days (you had to redownload the changes of course and for some that took a lot of time so they kept it going for about 3 days).
