The Daily Grind: What MMO content are you looking forward to in the last months of 2021?

This is going to be a busy end of the year, isn’t it? We’ve got expansions coming out for Final Fantasy XIV and Lord of the Rings Online, and we’ve got New World and Elyon both aiming at launch at long last. And that’s just the stuff that springs to mind off the top of my head; I’m sure that there are more things to look forward to, like the reveal of the remainder of the Guild Wars 2 elite specializations for its next expansion, or even things we don’t yet know about.

Heck, all of that is assuming that you’re really looking forward to something new; maybe you’re really excited about something that’s happening at a lower scale, like a long-standing roleplaying plot getting resolved or finally clearing some difficult content. So is there anything you’re looking forward to in the tail end of 2021? Is it some big new content reveal or release, or is it something more personal?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

After about 5 attempts to like the game, I am finally getting into a FFXIV groove. The proposed job changes seem to be fixing the things I currently hate too.

Definitely SWTOR especially with Combat Style, New Expansion and 10th anniversary events

Warframe’s New War.

I’m cautiously hopeful about this. I would really like it to be good. After “Railjack upgrades” and “Sisters of Parvos,” I’m expecting to be disappointed.

I wouldn’t say looking forward to it, but I’m hoping SWTOR’s combat changes don’t prune any skills I enjoy.

Prunes keep you regular… just don’t overdo it.

From what i understood watching their livestreams and reading their blogs and test server posts, their global goal, apart from making it easier to learn for newcomers, is to heavily tone down the need for CC and will change all encounters acoordingly as well.

That said reworking all attackable mobs in game is a big undertaking and i expect hiccups(I remember in WoW the prepatch for pandaria that squished stats initially broke many encounters and you could get instant KO in WotLK areas, as example). I just hope the fixes will be fast.

The Halloween event in City of Heroes.

And SWTOR, once the new Combat Upgrade has gone live.

I’m looking forward to the SWTOR expansion, with some trepidation.

The idea of being able to mix and match the powersets to class stories is going to be interesting, even if slightly “game breaking” (ie. much of the Consular/Inquisitor/Agent/Smuggler story content has stealth detecting enemies whereas the others don’t).

However, I’m worried as a recent marathon story run brought into focus just how tedious and drawn out the post-Shadow of Revan content is. I tried playing through all the class story for a Sith Warrior, and was fine right up to Fallen Empire, but by half way through chapter 10 I was broken. I’d love it if the game got back to Oricron style content (simple fights, but you had to understand how to actually play and couldn’t just let your healer take care of the work of keeping you alive), but I suspect it be full of more tedious, drawn out, ridiculous scripted encounters. I’m hoping its otherwise, but not holding my breath.

Uh…the vague FO76 December update I suppose. And…that’s about it, not into much else right now and GW2 won’t be getting anything until next year.

Maybe New World eventually, but I wasn’t hugely in love with the beta.

I no longer have the ability to look forward to anything. So an unexpectedly pleasant surprise would be nice.

Actually?? SWTOR. Wow. But really, yes. I want to see how comfy I get with class changes/pruning. If I get real comfy, I return.

Second place FFXIV Endwalker which I hope is great. Would be nice to see ‘Trial version’ open to a full F2P content (all players) and expand to Stormblood, but that’s just a wishlist that I don’t expect.

New World interested but didn’t super impress on me. Its more of a ‘check in 2022-23’ thing unless a friend pulls me in.
No thank you to Elyion though I might give it another (final) install.
