The Daily Grind: What’s the most important medium you have for talking with your MMO friends?

Bad people doing bad things.

There was a time, way back when, that I kept AOL Instant Messenger open on a regular just because it was the easiest way to keep in touch with friends from Final Fantasy XI. I didn’t particularly like the program or anything, but most of the people I knew used the program, so it was the easiest way to stay in touch with them out of the game. By contrast, it was kind of nice when World of Warcraft arrived and I mostly kept in touch with friends in the game by… being in the game. It felt refreshing.

Of course, times have changed, and these days I neither use AIM nor WoW to keep in touch with most of my WoW friends. Then again, I’m probably not alone in that; most people probably are using Discord or Twitter or Facebook, and some people are absolutely going down with the IRC ship and still use that to talk with most of their friends no matter what other options are out there. So what’s the most important medium you have for talking with your MMO friends? Is it the game itself or something else?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
