Phantasy Star Online 2’s latest update adds more story and raises the level cap as SEGA America begins layoffs

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis players are in for a treat today, and they deserve it after waiting through a nine-hour maintenance with multiple delays. SEGA’s arcade-y take on the MMORPG released the patch this morning, boasting quality-of-life improvements, an increased level cap, and most importantly, new content.

The February 2024 update finishes up the current storyline with the release of the final half of chapter 6. For those who are more interested in hitting the new level cap of 85, the Kvaris region got a nice glowup with every part of the region getting an update to the mobs. Preset skills (think passive weapon stat bonuses) also got a buff and a promise from SEGA that it won’t make anything weaker. To top it all off, there’s a new 10-star weapon and 9-star armor to make grind and level up for.

Unfortunately, the release has been soured by the news that SEGA of America is playing off 61 workers in March. Union AEGIS had been negotiating with SEGA and apparently managed to save some of the jobs and secure severance for contract and temporary workers affected.
