Back around the time when I first was getting my sea legs on Massively-that-was, donating to an MMO Kickstarter was basically a rite of passage. There was a sense among certain wings of the industry that this was the wave of the future, and when some of those games released we’d all see the results of creative visions untrammeled by the whims of publishers and MMOPRGs would enter a new golden age!
This was never an idea I subscribed to, but here in 2024 it sounds downright hilarious. None of this played out as the future of anything; instead, even the MMORPGs that actually saw the light of day from this particular moment in time wound up not really lighting the world on fire to say the least. For the people who are not still desperately clinging to the idea that one day the games will arrive from the skies delivering all that was once promised, it’s more regarded as a somewhat shameful fever dream.
But today, our question is more about whether or not you got swept up in that dream. It’s all right if you did, there’s no need for shame here. Have you ever backed an MMO Kickstarter? And if so, how much do you wish you hadn’t now?
