Digital Extremes’ Soulframe talks prelude testing, character customization, and creepy dogs

Digital Extremes’ Soulframe has been flying under the radar through development the last year or two, to the point that when we gave it a nod for Most Anticipated MMO, a lot of people couldn’t even remember what it was. That might be changing soon as the studio has delivered the first of what will presumable be more videos about the game’s early testing periods, which it’s calling “preludes.”

For starters, the devs have been working on dogs… and not the kind you pet… as part of a general enemy diversity push that includes spooky and creepy mobs, in addition to efforts on locations like The Glade and the Undercity. Apparently, the devs have also made Idols (sort of like a super-weapon ultimate) swappable too. Honestly, if you’re not already in the preludes testing, you’re probably going to find it all a bit confusing and esoteric, but either way… progress marches onward. Also pretty pictures.

The back chunk of the video is a Q&A based on questions from Discord; the team says that “thrash” and turbulence on game systems in testing will continue to the fall test, that transparency on things like loot tables is possible, that more vertical play is on deck (but don’t expect a hardcore parkour system), that movement speed is being meted out carefully so as not to diminish the world feel, that the team is working on Verminia the rat witch, and that players can expect a big push on character customization.
