The Daily Grind: Which landscape tropes in MMOs have you rolling your eyes?

We’ve talked about general MMO tropes in this space before, but it’s not often that we see people call out online games and their designers for somewhat lazy landscape clichés that are reused.

Think of the clearly not inspired by Middle-earth places that put a big sulky volcano right in the middle of an area, belching ash. Or the idyllic and defenseless beginner zone villages that will never be seen in any higher-level zone. Or there’s always my big pet peeve, inexplicable floating islands with waterfalls. The waterfalls always slay me.

With a spirit of amusement and using our sharp observational powers, what are some other landscape tropes that tend to pop up in a lot of MMOs? Which ones have you wincing and muttering, “Here we go again with this!”
