The recent furor over Lord of the Rings Online’s surprise — and partial — announcement that new 64-bit servers are coming to the game with transfers resulted in a riled-up and anxious community, as explained in our recent LOTRO Legendarium column.

In a forum post asking for the current servers to simply be upgraded to this new tech, Standing Stone Games’ developers addressed why they decided to announce such a groundbreaking move as these new worlds without a full slate of details.

“We will have more information in January,” the devs said. “Since our timeline is accelerated in the new year, we wanted to open the concept to the community in a timely manner and provide further details the earliest possible moment we could. We had received your feedback in the past about announcements happening ‘too late to prepare,’ so that was the primary motivation for including this information in the letter. We have now seen the results of that decision, and we will have to re-evaluate the wisdom of providing introductory information in the future.”
