Welcome back to Massively Overpowered’s formal end-of-the-year awards for one more special award. Readers will remember that a few years ago, we decided to institute a lifetime achievement award specifically to honor an MMORPG that has made a significant contribution to the genre over the course of its lifetime and the genre’s history but may not be recognized within the confines of our regular awards.
Last year’s recipient was Classic Guild Wars. This year’s lifetime achievement award goes to none other than…
EVERQUEST
EverQuest’s sheer resilience impresses me, even if it’s never been an MMO that’s clicked with my style. I do admire how it’s endured, grown, and fostered a dedicated community that digs this old-school vibe. When you step back and look at its dozens of expansions and treasure trove of content, it’s one of the most impressive video games that took a quarter-century to create. -Justin
EverQuest literally turned 25 years old this year, and whether you have good memories of it, bad memories of it, or no memories of all of it, you can still play it to make more – not something many MMOs from that era can say. Plus, Daybreak is still updating the game and its sequel with patches and annual expansions. Again, not something many MMOs from any era can say. We’ll cap off the Year of Darkpaw with a salute for this oldie but goodie. The MMORPG genre wouldn’t be the same without ya. -Bree
That’s a wrap – a real wrap – on our formal awards for 2024. Congratulations to all our winners!
