There is precious little in Final Fantasy XIV that I have not seen personally. MOP’s Bree knows this, and it definitely helps that whenever I talk about the game I am coming from a position of having seen a good portion of what the game has on offer. Whatever content is under discussion, odds are good that I have not just cleared it but have investigated it with a scrupulous eye. There is no doubt in my mind as a writer that I know that game and can speak about it confidently.

But there’s also no doubt in my mind that this degree of knowledge is, in fact, surplus to requirements.

I don’t mean that I regret it, just that I do not need to have done everything at the level of intensity with which I operate in order to confidently write about a game. You can, in fact, speak pretty confidently about games with less knowledge of the minutiae. So today I want to turn to that in the abstract. How much of an MMORPG do you think someone needs to play in order to know it? How far do you need to get in terms of leveling and progression before you can confidently opine on a game?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
