The Daily Grind: Are guilds important to your MMO experience?

There was a time in MMO history when a guild was more or less a requirement to do much of what you would want to do within an MMO. I certainly remember that Final Fantasy XI pretty well required one for most stuff (even though “guilds” didn’t quite exist in the game the way they do in others). And it’s rare for me to not be in a guild in an MMO I’m playing with any enthusiasm; my longest streak of not being guilded was in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and that was an anomaly.

That having been said, if I lost my guild in Final Fantasy XIV? My reaction would be to shrug and move on. It’s just not super important to me.

For some people, it’s even less important; I know people who don’t even want to be in guilds at all. I also know some people who will leave games altogether if they lose their guilds, or at least completely change the characters they’re playing. So today, let’s turn the question over to our readers. Are guilds important to your MMO experience? Do you majorly rearrange your playstyle for a guild, or do you tend to think of them as optional at best?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
