In graphical games, looks matter — even when we claim we’re above such petty eye candy. And when we’re crafting a character to represent ourselves for dozens if not hundreds of hours, it’s a big pill to swallow to pick an ugly or off-putting race to be our avatar.
I’ve tried. I have tried many times. I’ve gone to the character creation screen and booted up that scaly lizard-man, or that gangly orc, or that bucket of slime and became determined that I’d grow to love this character. Three minutes into the tutorial, and I’m back out on the character select screen, sending his slimy form to wherever deleted, unloved characters end up.
