OK, so here’s a fun Daily Grind for a holiday when most of our readers aren’t at work! Let’s talk about how to pronounce our genre, and this is a serious question!
I’ve always spelled it out every letter M-M-O-R-P-G, like emm-emm-oh-are-pee-gee. (Or tried to; I have a mild speech impediment, and sometimes I rush and my letters are jumbled, but that’s how I say it in my head. And it’s one of the reasons I don’t mind truncating it to MMO. The rhotic “R” is the hardest for me, and yes I know I have two of them in my own name; “rural juror” is my nightmare!)
But listen, there are folks out there who say MMORPG as “more-pig,” and I have to say I burst out laughing the first time I heard this – I think it was Larry like a dozen years ago, but since then I’ve heard it more and more, and… I kind of like it? It makes sense? It’s two syllables instead of six? And pigs are cute, so we definitely need more?
Maybe there’s a third way – you tell me. How do you pronounce MMORPG?
