The launch woes for Once Human don’t appear to be easing anytime soon, and in fact one could argue that they’re getting worse as time goes on, as NetEase’s Starry Studios wrestles with unfinished character creation issues and extremely rickety servers.
Last week saw the ability to make multiple characters open up ahead of schedule as a result of player outcry; originally players were able to only make one character and were unable to delete that character, which meant friends were often unable to play together. According to Starry, the ability to make several characters wasn’t set to go live until August 1st because of “the imperfect experience of playing with multiple characters,” but the option was pushed forward instead.
This would otherwise be good news except the ability to create multiple characters has caused a fresh slate of problems: As friends try to land together on the same server, population limits are getting hit and queues are beginning to form. Starry promises that temporary measures that will raise server limits are being worked on, while August will introduce a way for players to invite their friends on to their server even if the server is full.
The shaky infrastructure has also caused entire servers in SEA and NA regions to go mysteriously dark for a couple of hours; those servers were returned, but explanations on what happened are arguably thin.
Despite the mess, there is some good news for fans, as players who have purchased cosmetics and battle passes will be seeing currencies and cosmetics shared account-wide, while those who have already made multiple purchases will receive currency refunds or stipends. Otherwise the game is celebrating over 500K Discord members and answering several general player questions about other crashes, controller support, additional languages, and the ability to rebind keys.
