We named the maps in Lord of the Rings Online somewhere in the middle among the worst to best maps in MMOs, but apparently those maps are good for at least one thing: as part of some splashy promotion by Warner Bros. Pictures to highlight its animated Lord of the Rings film The War of the Rohirrim.
MMORPG players were quick to spot the signature style of LOTRO’s maps in a promotional vignette that talked up the return to Hobbiton, with a quick fly-over a part of the Shire towards the location itself before fading into a real-world event for the film that took place on the set of the Hobbiton location built for Peter Jackson’s movies.
Reaction to this little nod varies from presumptions that Warner Bros. (which owned the rights to LOTRO back in the day) just used an old asset to some pining for the fjords of the old map style. Overall, it looks like a fun little reference for fans one way or the other.
