No one would debate whether or not it’s appropriate to ban players for cheating, but there is space to debate whether or not it’s appropriate to state which players were banned. MechWarrior Online has opted to do just that, and its recent banning of 64 players comes along with a full list of account names. The players in question will also have a descriptor applied to their forum accounts to note that they were banned for cheating.

The announcement comes along with a reminder that harassing or pursuing these players is explicitly against the terms of service for the game. According to a previous post on the subject, these names are being provided chiefly so that players can see that actions are being taken against cheaters. Whether or not this seems like a good step in that direction or just opening an entirely different can of worms is left as an exercise to the reader.
