Sword and Bored: Player housing

When I saw the script for this comic strip, I knew exactly what Jef had been doing for the last few weeks: strongholds in Star Wars: The Old Republic. There is clearly a love-hate relationship between Jef and SWTOR housing. I completely feel his frustrations because I fight them myself.

Mo has his personal frustration with player housing in the comic below…

In Eq2 you can have crafting stations, your minions, bank access, auction access, mailboxes and guild halls training dummies, quests etc. That was very convenient and useful.

The cash shop wasn’t invented to milk players, it was invented because players stopped paying subscriptions to anything but the leading MMO’s.

Radfist ToyFuzion John Wise Yeah, UO’s housing was there from 1997 and is still among the best, even isometric. I’m not even sure that should make 3-D MMOs without housing feel that bad. UO is just that good.
EQ2 and SWG, though, that’s been hard to top.
As to cash shops, games have that those since almost that long too. RuneScape and UO had them very, very early.

I like TOR’s hook system, and I played SWG and RIFT and loved there’s too. Sometimes though I just wanna sit back with a pint in Yavin 4 and not go insane trying to size and rotate all damn day. :D

ToyFuzion John Wise UO was probably the first western MMO with housing (could be wrong though).  But EQ2 definitely perfected it.  Even today I would say it has the best housing system of the genre.  Wildstar comes pretty close.

John Wise I’m pretty sure Smedley, the ex-CEO of SoE and Daybreak invented it, or was the first NA MMO to expand on it. There were articles he did introducing it to EQ2 years ago. My memory could be off a little!

ColdinT Not to mention SWTOR’s decorating leaves a lot to be desired. You can’t place things just anywhere, it has to go on a hook. I don’t know who designed TOR housing, but it’s definitely bottom-of-the-mill housing.

I’ve learned my way around paying real dollars for decorating in SWTOR. The first is patience, then picking up slicing and finding a nice out-of-the-way spot to make some quick credits for fluff-gathering. xD Also I’ve learned timing when I buy stuff with credits. I know the market becomes flooded 2-5 days after the release of a pack, then people are busy undercutting each other for the first week or two. That’s when I buy stuff with game currency.

Ain’t it a bitch when the paywall has a paydoor installed?

MorpayneRADIO I don’t know, my little store in UO was pretty cool and a lot of fights happened around it. :p

The only useful player housing in all of gaming comes from 2 games, Wildstar and DCUO. You can use them as pvp battlegrounds, /end article.

Gold wouldn’t normally have value?  Nor crafting materials? Nor NPC currencies?

I really don’t have an issue with housing being in the cash shop in a f2p game. It should be part of a sub if there is one available but I don’t really see is as something that should always be free or basic content.

I didn’t like the panel of him trying to stuff everything that wouldn’t normally have value into the slot though :)

This is the same concept in ArchAge.  Only the subscribers can have land to even build houses upon.  Then there’s the issue with selling land requiring sell deed tickets, handfuls of them based on how much the property is selling for; of course it’s a cash shop item as well.

Ooh, I like the level of detail in this week’s comic.

I was willing to give EA the benefit of the doubt, but they completely dropped the ball with the business model for SWTOR…

Feydakin kunda311 John Wise I’m not one of those people who feels the need to hate on companies like EA though they have a bit of a, ahem, reputation… but yeah, on this one I fully blame EA, not BioWare.

Sounds about right for SWTOR housing. You have to pump so many credits to fully unlock an entire house, even just to get to the location you see in the first cutscene! It’s honestly a bit absurd.

P.S. Wildstar’s housing is way better ;)

kunda311 John Wise Agree completely about SWTOR’s cash shop… been saying it since the F2P conversion. I think I have the most problem with how they fracture the community by putting up pay walls on all the group content… stupid, stupid, stupid.

John Wise One thing I will say about TOR: love the game overall, hate their cash shop. It was definitely one of the more poorly implemented and more money-grubbing schemes around – I just sub or don’t play the game at all. I will gladly pay $15 a month like any other MMO, but I am very hesitant to support the game financially through the Cartel Market… if others have the disposable income and nothing better to spend it on, good for them.

Love the game, hate the CM – EA and BioWare should look to Rift for an example of how to do it right.

Ha, at least he don’t have to deal with a limited number of housing spots or people building their house on newly free spots from the other side of the world.

Who ever invented the cash shop is a business genius. Milk player pockets until the last drop. Well played, whoever you are.
