WildStar systems lead Brett Scheinert leaves Carbine

WildStar is one fewer dev strong today now that Multiplayer Systems Lead Brett “Timetravel” Scheinert has left Carbine Studios. He had been with the company since 2011.

“[I am] no longer an employee there,” Scheinert confirmed on Twitter. “I am sorry for the drama my departure is causing. I also can’t really go into the details.”

It is not clear whether Scheinert left of his own volition or was let go. Scheinert previously worked on WildStar’s dungeons and quests before moving up into the position of Multiplayer Systems Lead. This move comes a month after Chad Moore took over the director position from Mike Donatelli.

BringDaAmblamps MetaDune Rozyn Never trust a game from a dev team that talks more about how great their game is rather than put it in people’s hands and let them tell you. Wildstar Devs did a lot of talking.

Qarran If the show you were watching wasn’t the Young and the Restless then, yes, it would be nothing. However, the Wildstar show is the young and the restless.

This likely has more to do with a confidentiality clause in his hiring agreement than CA law.

I’ve seen this before at my work, guy gets canned says he can’t talk about it…… Of course the guy at my work was looking at porn in his cubicle where anyone could see, I just like to imagine thats why everyone can’t talk about why they’re unemployed, at least they went out happy…

I like Wildstar. I wanted to hate it. I got it initially on sale for cheap, shortly after launch and figured I would try. The music, one of the best soundtracks in gaming imho. The atmosphere. I enjoy the combat tho see why some wouldn’t. The f2p launch was abysmal. The monetization wasn’t so bad, but the launch itself was one of the worst I had seen, with lag being so bad they had to create new servers. Now the only dev who took the time to talk to the community is gone. I don’t think the game is dying any time too soon, but if it does………….can I just get the soundtrack on vinyl?

Bannex19 I never really got into it myself, just wasn’t my bag, but considering how cool it seemed and how much technical work apparently went into it, this is unfortunate to see.

Qarran Agree with everything you said.  However, in the case of Carbine/WS, I wonder if there isn’t cause for “extra” concern when something like this happens.  I mean, the storyline of this studio and game hasn’t exactly been great, and in fact may have been close to Y&R as you mentioned.  The thing went f2p in what, 6 months?  Compound that with server merges and stories like this, and you get a recipe for forum fodder, sure, but there may be reasons behind that.
It’s sad, really, because the game itself had lots of potential; I don’t think its decline from p2p-with-potential to f2p-with-more-merges is due to it being of poor quality, it seems to be because of whatever has been going on in the studio itself.
Who knows, the guy could have left for any one of 100 reasons, but again in the case of this game, which has struggled from the outset, I guess it kinda makes you wonder.

Hmm.  So… A tweet here a forum post there and suddenly we got “The Young and The Restless.”

Is this newsworthy?  Yes.  A major cog in the dev of Wildstar has left.  Is it a harbinger of ill-fortune?  In and of itself, nah. Not really.

People come and go from a place of work for all sorts of less than amicable reasons.  Personality clashes, code of conduct, family issues, creative issues, personal problems, etc. etc. etc.   It is not unusual at all.  The truth is we don’t know what happened.

Forum fodder and over reaction is not uncommon either.  Neither is the need of gamers to know something about the devs that may not even be remotely their business.

ManastuUtakata thats why i said “publishing” i know they are separate developers, its just that two of them leaves in a matter of days whose both games are published by NC.

The reason is Carbine led us to believe the game was going to be this quirky and fun Sci-Fi adventure when it was announced. Then, those dumbasses did the typical 180. You can see the features, the quirky that is present. However, the hardcore attitude scared everyone off and the rest is history.
It is a damn shame.
They spent AAA money on a niche hardcore stance. Sounds more idiotic now than before.
They also took the sub or die approach. Gosh, just so much arrogance.

BritoBruno A Dad Supreme  IANAL, but I would be quite surprised if this is an issue.  First, how does limiting the individual’s – not corporations – free speech get past the First Amendment? Second, limiting the employee is very different than the other CA laws I know about – e.g. non-compete contracts that are enforceable in other states are not enforceable in CA.

It seems a lot of people here don’t realize how TT is a bigger issue than they think.
He was literally one of the FEW devs to EVER communicate on forums and reddit, and Carbine’s communication is as shitty as it is with him INSIDE IT.
That’s why reddit and the forums exploded. Because losing one of the avenues for communication players-company is extremely dangerous when the game is doing THIS badly.
And no, i don’t want WS to fail. No, i actually love Wildstar. Don’t come here and say i want this game to be ripped to shreds because i don’t. But i am fucking capable of seeing where it stands right now, and it’s a shell of what it should be.

A Dad Supreme Isn’t an issue about californian laws? He may simply not be able to talk the details not because it wasn’t amicable, but because of laws?

I happily paid my Wildstar sub for as long as I played it. However, their end-game design was not to my interest so after capping a couple of characters, I moved on.  I very much prefer subs to F2P games.

They should just change Wildstar’s name to Revolving Door. It would more accurately reflect both the developers and the playerbase.

Madda  “most notable for failing spectacularly to get enough subs to prevent F2P”

What a glorious non-sentence because this applies to what, all mmorpgs that launched with a subscribtion fee in the last 7 years?

Greaterdivinity Velimirius I still think NCSoft has some ‘push’. GW2 getting an ‘expansion’ was likely via NCSofts pushing for example.

Rozyn Madda What was so spectacular was that the subs were already pretty much dead before it even launched and they stuck there strategy so long after it wasn’t going to work. Wildstar was a pretty feature rich game on launch. Flawed in some ways yes, but feature and content rich. However its business failures have had a snowball effect on the game that it may never recover from. Wildstar is still a pretty good game and less flawed in some ways and more flawed in others, but at this point it should of been so much more than what it is.

Rozyn BringDaAmblamps Wildstar was always Massively’s darling. Criticism of the game from this site was directed entirely at its ‘hardcore or gtfo’ attitude. I don’t recall that the game ever received much ‘hate’ from these quarters. There were certainly disagreements about the art style, but they took place in the broader context of ‘cartoony’ vs ‘realistic’.

I believe that ANet and Carbine are their own separate entities that only have NC as a financial backer. Thus these leavings are ANet and Carbine’s own business, and really have nothing to do with NC or each other. At least that’s how I am understanding it.

Ironwu Yeah man, why would NCSoft try to salvage a game that had millions spent on its development over many years and still has people who both enjoy it and want it to to succeed? Nah, you don’t particularly like it so it should probably just be shut down to the detriment of MMO variety and an already crippled market.

Rozyn Greaterdivinity Zucatti360 Nah man chill, we all know it’s only the subscription and (to some degree) B2P games that cost money to make. F2P games are actually FREE to design, develop, maintain and play. Welcome to the Free-for-all revolution!
