DUST 514 sunsets today

Back in February, CCP announced that it was sunsetting console shooter DUST 514 on May 30th -- and now that day has arrived.

Players are saying farewell across social media, forums, and YouTube.

Take heart, though, because CCP is indeed working on a shooter replacement for DUST 514: Project Nova.

o7, DUST.

EVE Evolved: The right way to reboot DUST 514 - [AL:EVE]This week we heard the news that CCP Games will be officially shutting down PS3 online shooter DUST 514 in May to start work on a PC reboot. While this is obviously disappointing for the small but dedicated community that…

It was like a lot of things, that looks good...oh it's a console only thing.

And so castles made of sand,

fall into the sea,

eventually.

Gonna miss you Dust514.

I would say it was good game that really should have been on the pc to begin with but in being on the console first some gamers who would have never seen got to play a good game that will only get better without those pesky memory limitations of the consoles.

So now when they make a pc version the hardware is thousands of times faster on the pc side to have eye candy and if they want to use a controller most of them work on the pc, with a much faster hardware. I use a xbox 360 controller for MK10. Best part those gamers who grew up with the game because what they could afford in school or college was a console should be old enough to afford a decent gaming rig.

Still makes me a little sad even though a replacement is on the way. Watching something I once hyped over sunset just hits me somewhere deep.

Has CCP done anything beside Eve which isn't a failure?

GiantsBane

@shak77 They've failed a lot harder than they've succeeded.  EVE inflated their egos way to much.

played it briefly on PS3, it was cool but more experimental and ahead of its time, should have been on the PC too. Looking forward to the new Dust 514 (Project Novat)

I guess they are a 1 time wonder and that's it. Back to Eve, Adam.

Sunset implies the game shone like the sun in it's heyday. This seems more like someone just turned off the lights.

So who's doing the emu of Eve and 514 that work in concert together? Anyone? Hello?

Take heart, CCP is working on a new project......that will go exactly the same way as this and other such hair-brained schemes. They never learn and EvE players continue to suffer because of that.

I'm sure less than 514 players will actually miss it.

CCP shot themselves in the foot by doing that exclusive deal with Sony.  Never alienate your playerbase like that.  :|   At least on PC it could've had longevity and no limits as far as updates go.

@Sorenthaz Well, they probably wouldn't have been able to do Dust 514 at all without Sony, so...

GiantsBane

@Boardwalker @Sorenthaz Especially after all the resources they wasted on WoD before they finally shuttered that project.  Oh wait, they didn't devote any resources to it, then wondered why nothing to done and shuttered it after years of their own glaring inability to manage anything other than EVE (and even their management of EVE is debatable).

Sorenthaz
Sorenthaz

@GiantsBane @Boardwalker @Sorenthaz I mean, they did do some tech demos and a never-released-to-public clip showing off in-game footage during one press conference or w/e.   But at the end of the day they basically couldn't figure out how to do something that wasn't EVE.

How was Dust 514  patched out of Eve ?

Well, at least they're working on a replacement, and from the sounds of it, it's everything DUST should have been from the beginning.  Better late than never, huh, CCP?

It's unfortunate that both Darkfall and DUST had to go down today, although at least other teams have taken over the original Darkfall for the fans, and likely most of DUST's staff has been moved to Project Nova (hopefully, anyway).

@Denice J Cook  My guess is most of the staff is working on VR titles (e.g. IIRC Gundrak came from Shanghai) rather than a PC shooter.

Oh no. Truly we lose something special. Without a grey and black soulless shooter we are only left with things like Warframe and Destiny with all their strange primary colour use and gameplay that involves more than wondering where all the players went.

How will we ever go on, can consoles even survive without this titan of first person shooter gameplay?

Sarcrasm aside this things dead for a reason.

@Dope_Danny  The strategy (try to attract completely new customers on a new platform) was not as stupid as the old customers said. A big problem was the execution, which was not good enough to be noticed above the noise.

@SallyBowls1 @Dope_Danny I definitely think it was stupid. Nothing wrong with attracting new customers, but when your fanbase and your lore is exclusively on PC, neglecting PC is mindboggling.

The fact that the execution sucked didn't help.

@SallyBowls1 @Dope_Danny This game never should have been a console exclusive. If they would have released a PC version with crossplay (or without) this game would have had a chance to actually be played more then it was.

@shak77 @breetoplay @SallyBowls1 @Dope_Danny Just cause a group has struck gold on one major project does not mean that they can take that luck and push it to another project. They realise that EVE is an aging game and they need new avenues alongside it for their future. There have been plenty of similar companies trying out new ips after a success only to fall flat.

If anything Dust514 brought them good insight on how to develop another game model that is not EVE itself. On the other side it was a solid push for cross platform gaming again. The more games that can make that push the better it is for all of us. I mean look at it now. We have Rocket League on 3 different systems all with crossplay.

shak77

@sydh @shak77 @breetoplay @SallyBowls1 @Dope_Danny Crossplatform games is, for me as a premium PC owner, entirely negative. The games get intentionally dumbed down and technically inferior just to fit the console market not to mention the inferior gamepad support which is useless for most PC games.

Also you forget the World of Darkness franchise. Which they put down millions in and produced absolutely nothing. CCP is simply a failed company and would it not for Eve they would have gone bankrupt long ago.
