WRUP: Happy holidays, have some glass eyes edition

Happy holidays, everyone! Here is your gift. It is a carefully made box full of glass eyes. I am giving you a box filled with fake eyes. They are not real, but they are made to look real, and I expect you to enjoy this gift. I want you to tell me how happy you are to receive it. I want you to display this prominently in your home.

If you are single, this should be one of the things that prospective dates see when they enter your home. If you are married, this is something that you have to place out prominently whether your spouse likes it or not. It was exceedingly expensive! And you cannot return or exchange it, it was all hand-crafted.

So happy holidays! Have a box full of eyes. Let us know what you’re up to in the comments of What Are You Playing, and enjoy the totally helpful gift that’s sure to start all sorts of conversations.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): As a water trainer, I’m excited about the new Pokemon Go event, so clearly that’s happening when I’m not dealing with holiday stuff. Final Fantasy XIV needs some attention still, as does Overwatch.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Jack-all. I picked up some goodies in the Steam sale, but I’ll be confined to mobile games for the holiday and won’t get to touch the new stuff until after. Enjoy it, those of you who get to spend this time gaming!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog):I finished the story on Nier: Automata, so it’s just unlocking the post-game stuff and enjoying story analysis and such. I’ll doubtlessly get some time in on World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV, but that’ll have to be between holiday celebrations. Happy Festivus!

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): I might be winding down game time this weekend to be with family, but I am sprinting toward the top of Orochi Tower in Secret World Legends before the end of 2017. I’m doing that thing where I’m reading through a lot of end-of-year lists to see what I might have missed this year and tack on a few more games to my to-play list. I did pick up Elite: Dangerous, Wild Busters, and Broke Protocol lately, but they’re all getting put on the backburner for now.

Your turn!

Loaded ESO again because its one MMO I havent yet maxed out. Its still pretty grindy and lonely, but at least its new to me. No auction house?

Also checking out SC 3.0, but waiting on them to fix some bugs before its really playable.

Well…much to my surprise, when I finished Ilum, the last world in the first part of SWTOR, I returned to my ship, having skipped the Flashpoint where I guess that last Sith is killed, and there on my mission terminal was that purple triangle, which told me I needed to go to Makeb! That’s the first part of the Rise of the Hutt Cartel. I don’t know when that expansion came out, it was a long time ago, I do know that. So, maybe I was a subscriber when it came out? Since it’s available, on to Makeb. Hey, it’s something to do. Is it bad that I can never find my ship after I’ve finished the story arc for a planet? I have a system now, can’t locate ship–> go to Stronghold–>enter Tatooine–> catch ship at Tatooine space port. …it’s the scenic route but at least I can find the dang ship there. Anyway, please dear God let some game come out in 2018 that is interesting to play.

My birthday so we did lunch and then a one off family session of old school d&d, lots of fun though getting ppl to rp was a little difficult and we kept mixing up the dice. More wine did not help … Could have used the box of eyes spell.

Spent most of the day sleeping off a stomach bug. But my time awake was spent playing Breath of the Wild, the MHW beta, and AC: Origins. I beat all of the Trials of the Sword tonight; feel pretty good about that. Experimented with my weapon of choice in MH (the Charge Blade). And just wandered the world of AC: Origins, marveling at its beauty.

Hope everyone has a safe weekend!

Oh, and I started a (possible) level 1 playthrough of FFXV. We’ll see. Depending on how things turn out, I might cap myself at to-be-determined higher level.

I’ll give the glass eyeballs a pass!

I’m still playing FFXIV, although I’ve barely logged in since starting up BDO again. It has most of my attention, but I’ve managed to pull myself away to partake in Secret World Legends holiday content.

I’m still in the middle of LotRO. My pacifistic alt, a hobbit burgular, has decided she wants to make level 60 before Frostbluff closes up (which shouldn’t be a problem as she’s already level 59). Thing is, she’s pacifistic, and so she does a lot of her leveling in festivals, exploration deeds and crafting, and man is she ever sick of Moria! The winter festival is probably the easiest time of year to level if you’re a pacifist. Lothlorien or bust.

Meanwhile, Blizzard just put Legion (which I don’t have) on sale for $25 … but it’ll be $40 for me to resub as well. Hmmm …. maybe I’ll go bake a loaf of Mulgore Spice Bread
for the holidays and think it over. Have a great weekend and holiday, everyone!

Probably the biggest gaming news around here this week is that my eighty-year-old gamer Pops is now playing Warframe! :-)

After some repairs to his rig, and swapping in a newer video card that it could handle (it’s a non-state-of the-tech, off-the-shelf rig that shipped with crappy onboard graphics), we settled on a Gigabyte Nvidia GT 710).

Pops may not stick with Warframe (he finds its lore and aesthetics fairly incomprehensible), but so far, he’s chipping away at the game, blasting bad guys and calling his computer-controlled opponents all sorts of salty names. :-)

Functionally, the basics of Warframe are the most similar to the later incarnations of the Firefall game (which he LOVED) — meaning, high-tech power armor options with the possibility of gliding and flight, plus guns.

Although, he seems to really like chopping bad guys in Warframe with his sword as well. It’s slightly scary. :-D

If Warframe doesn’t keep him interested, I may try putting the PC version of Destiny 2 in front of him, although I’m not certain if the GT 710 vidcard could handle it …

Anyway folks … regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid, Secular Gift Giving, Hooray Cthulu Stayed Asleep This Year And Didn’t Kill Us, or any of the other 30-ish real-world religious festivals observed at this time of year — may you have a good one, and may the days be good to you.

I know that this time of year can be tough for a lot of folks. The expectations of joy feel like pressure, or else the year-end makes them look back on their life unfavorably.

I’m here to tell you that there are no inescapable expectations on you. Simply live your life day-to-day as best you can. It’s all any of us can do. And there’s no point in judging your past. The past is dust, gone beyond reach. We have today, and we have a promise of tomorrow. That’s it. Seek whatever joys you can, no matter how small or esoteric. That’s enough. You’re enough.

Thanks to everyone who made this year more entertaining for me — your kindness and camaraderie is both acknowledged and appreciated, believe me. My best to you all.

See you next time! :-)

YAY for dad! I love it. I want my grand kid to talk about me that way if I’m still around then. Good words for us all to remember. May your family have a peaceful and joyous holiday season.

Keep pushing for universal health care in the US, and your odds of gaming with the grandkid at ninety will go way up! :-) Your grandkid will thank you too!

Best to you and yours!

I only celebrate Christmas if I’m with the family, but they’re on the other side of the world so I can completely ignore it. Bliss. I’m going to finish watching Dark, catch up with season 2 of the Grand Tour and pootle about in Fallout some more.

If wearing fake moustaches and pretending to be the mexican housekeeper when mom comes to drag me to family stuff works, I plan on stay tucked in. Couch, blankets, cat, hot tea, fireplace and bingewatching with my bestie…no gaming planned, it just happens if it happens.

If my fake accent fails, I expect mucho disney movies with lil ones from the extended family and lot of forgettable conversation while I hide under the table munching all the foodsies and counting the minutes to midnight :P
