Perfect Ten: The biggest MMO stories of 2017

One thing you can say for the MMO industry: It never ceases to surprise all of us. No matter what predictions we may make at the beginning of a year, by December we will all be proven fools who lack vision and foresight.

Although 2017 isn’t quite over yet, we here at Massively Overpowered wanted to count down the biggest news stories that crossed over into our neck of the woods so far this year. We witnessed controversies and delights, shockers and sadness. We saw launches and shutdowns, expansions and bugs.

So before we move into 2018, let’s take a look at the year that was and remember the biggest stories that dominated headlines.

Perfect Ten: MMO things to be thankful about this year

It’s kind of hard to be thankful this year. Sure, some good things have happened this year, but we also have some things that, to put it politely, are unqualified messes. There’s everything around Star Wars: Battlefront II. There’s the shuttering of Master x Master and Marvel Heroes (the latter I actually flagged a year ago as being robust and healthy). There are titles like Lord of the Rings Online and ARK: Survival Evolved that have doubled down on methods to enrage players. And last but certainly not least, there’s still no sign of a sequel to the Warcraft film.

That one might be a grey area, actually.

But the year hasn’t been devoid of light, and there’s still stuff to be thankful for. So rather than being bitter and cranky about it, I want to focus on what we do have to be thankful for even while I hope for better in the future. Let’s talk about some stuff that’s good to be thankful for, even if it doesn’t tickle your particular fancy, and be a little more hopeful.

Massively OP Podcast Episode 145: Farewell Marvel Heroes and Master X Master

On this week’s show, Justin and Bree bid a sad farewell to Marvel Heroes (and Master X Master while we’re at it). It’s not all depressing news; Secret World Legends is killing it, there’s a new Path of Exile expansion, and Guild Wars 2’s fourth living world season is on its way.

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

NCsoft is already sunsetting MOBA Master X Master

NCsoft announced this evening that it will sunset its relatively new MOBA Master X Master, explaining that the game just “wasn’t enough to take on the established juggernauts.”

“There is no easy way to say this, but regretfully, we will be discontinuing our service for MXM, with the final day of the game’s life to be January 31. Deciding to close the game is not a decision we come to lightly, but ultimately it came down to a matter of business—we explored several options, but none of them were sustainable. We truly believe that MXM is special, and offered a lot of new ideas to change up the MOBA genre, but in trying to carve out a niche for itself, we failed to connect with players.”

The company will compensate players with a stack of cash-shop currency, refund all purchases made from August 30th to today, and turn on all game modes for the remainder of the game’s life, which will come to an end on January 31st.

Master X Master tosses in troubled teen Xero, starts Halloween craziness

If you could gather up teenage angst and a childhood twisted by mad science, what would it look like? A better question might be, what would it play like?

We are all gonna find out because Master X Master has added a new playable character to the game called Xero. A natural born trickster, Xero uses his innate talents and some holographic assistance to mess enemies up on the battlefield. Plus, he just oozes rebellion, and you know you want to help him work through it.

In addition to Xero, Update 1.4 turns on MXM’s Halloween content for the first time. This includes daily rewards, special skins, a new game mode, and a re-themed Dredgion. The new mode, by the way, is called Hardpoint Capture: “Hardpoint Capture is a new 4v4 PvP arena, where attack, defense, and a lot of teamwork is crucial to capturing and keeping each point. Show off your skills and earn gold, XP, and Medals in our competitive 4v4 combat scene — available from October 18 to November 15, and accessible 24/7 during that time.”

Master X Master gives love to Statesman, hate to Ghost Widow

It has been a couple of weeks since the previous Master X Master update, and while yesterday’s patch doesn’t deliver much in terms of new content, it’s still vital to process due to all of the changes levied against the game’s heroes.

It’s a mixed bag, to be honest. Demenos, Innowin, Dr. Raoul, Rytlock, Merope all are contending with some slight tweaks to attacks and heals to keep things tight in this competitive game. It’s a little amusing to see that City of Heroes’ Statesman came out of this patch with a buff, while Ghost Widow saw two of her skills nerfed.

The team also informed players that the Natium defense line has added weekly and monthly missions, so there’s a new wheel to spin!

Master x Master is devaluing one currency to improve another

Have you found yourself playing Master x Master and thinking that the game was just too darn generous with currency? Probably not, but then, you aren’t NCsoft and thus trying to derive a profit from the game. A new post on the official site explains that the studio believes the game was giving out too much SOL (the currency earned just from play) and not offering enough advantage to players using X-Coins (the currency bought for real money). So the economy is changing.

Nightmare mode will no longer cost SOL, X-Coin prices on unlocking Masters will go down, and SOL costs for most Master items will go up. The stated reason is that players were earning too much progress for free and there was a severe imbalance, but the Reddit thread in response is full of players who feel unlocking Masters is already expensive and making their items more expensive just limits the game for no player benefits.

However you feel about the changes, you’ll want to spend your SOL before September 13th, when the changes are set to roll out to everyone regardless of opinion.

Master x Master teases a new master arriving… probably

“Hey, what do you mean by ‘probably’ in the title there, buddy?” you ask, squinting at the computer and staring at the headline above. “What could the latest teaser for Master x Master just past the break possibly be about if not that?” And the answer? We don’t really know, but the teaser in question makes the bold decision of not mentioning the new character, not showing the new character, not even explaining anything about the new character aside from displaying a resurrection effect probably belonging to the new character.

So let’s be real here, it’s probably not a teaser for a particularly good brand of hot sauce. But it’s unclear what the new character is actually going to be aside from “someone who revives people.” Here, take our word for it, jump on past the break and watch it for yourself. It’s only half a minute long, we suspect you can spare the time.
