Gaijin announced a “major update” for War Thunder this week. The 1.47 Big Guns patch adds the game’s largest tank (the Pz.Kpfw.VIII Maus) and the game’s largest aircraft (the B-29 Superfortress). It also includes an early version of the IL-2 Sturmovik featuring 30 individually modeled parts, which makes for “the most detailed and accurate IL-2 ever recreated in a flight simulator.”

Gaijin says that future War Thunder aircraft will follow the standard set by the new IL-2.

Finally, Big Guns adds 14 new combat vehicles, the Steel Generals ground forces tree, more realistic environmental details and interaction for tank battles, and open cockpits and contrails for most of the game’s aircraft. You can get a glimpse of the patch via the video after the break.

EO_Lonegun Rustybladez Now if Gaijin would just design B-29s to carry jets that can be launched in mid-air, that would be !@#$! awesome!

Zariarn Landari_Omega Check the battle rating of your lineup. A tier one Stuart with a BR of 1.3 will never go up against a T-34 with a BR of 3.3 or higher, unless you have vehicles with higher BR in your lineup (or you are in a squad with another player who has). But if you have the tier two Stuart, with a BR of 2.3, it might be in a battle with early T-34s, which are also tier two.

Landari_Omega Zariarn I know this.  The whole balance of the game is broken but I believe the best balance is keeping tanks within tiers.  T-34’s mowing down Stuarts isn’t remotely fun.  However, T-34 going head to head with shermans and Tier 2 panzers is a better match up.  It’s not perfect but it’s a much better option than one t-34 taking out 5-6 tier 1 tanks with little resistance.
I failed to mention earlier.  These are my suggestions for arcade mode.  :)

melissamcdon From what I hear, its very useable but still requires a little bit of work. I was told its hard to gauge distances accurately.

Zariarn Landari_Omega That same T-34 player is also dealing with Tigers in his other games. If they matched players based exclusively on the era of their vehicles most players would lean towards one side or the other. Can you imagine a world where Tigers only fought Shermans and T-34s? Would be nice.

Landari_Omega Zariarn I believe they should only match tiers in battle.  A t-34 can take out 5-6 tier 1 tanks with little resistance.

Zariarn Landari_Omega Well at least the good thing about War Thunder is that higher tier tanks don’t get special treatment. No HP bar means your shots count. Those Tier 2 tanks you don’t like fighting will die just as easily as you if you know where to aim.

Zariarn Landari_Omega The daily “Events” limit the vehicles and are a bit more historically accurate. You can try those, they’re a lot of fun, especially the combined forces events – although a bit more for the hardcore player.

Landari_Omega Zariarn Yes, I’m aware of this but to place tier 1 tanks in the same battle as tier 2 tanks ends up very lopsided.

any readers have the Oculus DK2 and have played War Thunder?  Very curious about how it is.
