War Thunder introduces a soccer mode through July 9

It’s around World Cup season once again, and that means everyone is wondering when the United States will care about soccer to the level of forgetting other sports exist. Do you need to have tanks? Because War Thunder is bringing you tank soccer. Yes, you can drive around in tanks which are also playing soccer. This is helped by the fact that it’s impossible to touch a ball with the hands of your tank, because your tank does not, strictly speaking, have any hands.

The event minigame will award participants with a special fiery soccer ball decal, so you’ll want to get in on the 3v3 random queues or the 4v4 squad queues if you want to forever have a burning soccer ball on the side of your tank. Also the whole thing will be called “football,” because the United States is the only country where it’s not called “football.” In summary, even if you can’t bring yourself to care about the sport, care enough to get an event reward.

And tanks: World of Tanks revives World Cup soccer mode, War Thunder rolls out Project X

Ahhhh World Cup madness is upon the sportsball world right now, and if you happen to be into both soccer/football and tanks, well then I have some epic news for you: As of yesterday, World of Tanks has brought back Tank Football, its soccer mode, with some sweet new additions and prizes.

World of Tanks PC marks the biggest footballing event with the return of Tank Football, this time with three specialist roles and Gianluigi ‘Gigi’ Buffon as a commentator. The metal machines are ready to tear up the pitch, go for glory and be crowned victorious, all while the Italian legend gives a running commentary of a game. […] Tank Football 2018 is a return to 3 vs 3 matches where everyone is vying for glory. These matches take place in 3 special arenas, including one inspired by Moscow’s biggest stadium and host to the final, the Luzhniki. Three unique tanks, all with their own specialist roles and abilities on the pitch, are ready to be crowned champions. So whether players like to play up front or from the back, there are roles for everyone.”

War Thunder preps Naval Forces update with new light cruisers, World of Tanks kicks off console Dream Machines event for May

So many tank MMOs, so little time – but time enough to see what they’re up to!

War Thunder is actually working on everything but tanks right now. In anticipation of the closed beta test for its Naval Forces update, it’s revealed two new light cruiser warships: the Italian Giussano-class light cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni and the British HMS Enterprise, an Emerald-class light cruiser.

“Light cruisers are well placed at distance from smaller enemy vessels, in such conditions, they can inflict severe damage on the enemy fleet while sustaining fire even from two destroyers simultaneously. In close combat, armour-piercing shells can deal devastating damage to light cruisers, and they always need to keep an eye out for enemy torpedo boats sneaking dangerously close. Played strategically, light cruisers protected by destroyers and patrol ships will be able to assert dominance over an entire sea sector, securing strategic positions and blocking enemies from advancing through an area of interest.”

Gaijin’s space MMO Star Conflict rolls out Journey update tailored to newbies

I was shocked to realize today just how long it’s been since we covered Gaijin’s Star Conflict – that’s the rather well-loved but under-the-radar PvP space MMO by the same company that does War Thunder. So we’re glad to rectify that today as Gaijin has launched a massive update to the game called Journey that seems designed to get new players into the game without, you know, freaking them out.

“In a major redesign of the game’s progression system, players can now earn experience points and unlock new content by taking part in a story-driven campaign. The update offers beginners a gradual introduction to the game’s warring factions, different ship types, and incrementally increasing complex combat scenarios, while experienced pilots can head directly to more challenging adventures in outer space on new, powerful ships.”

The update further boasts new high-end ships and two new sectors of space where the “focus is on long-range engagements.” The game is free-to-play, so you can check it out on Steam at your leisure.

Battle Bards Episode 114: Vroom vroom!

Yes officer, these Battle Bards were well above the speed limit and violated many noise complaints in the local neighborhoods. But it was for a good cause, sir! This music from vehicular MMOs is just way too good to keep quiet! What’s that? You’ll let them go with just a warning? You only know they’re going to peel out and look for another score to settle!

Battle Bards is a bi-weekly podcast that alternates between examining a single MMO’s soundtrack and exploring music tracks revolving around a theme. MOP’s Justin co-hosts with bloggers Steff and Syl. The cast is available on iTunesGoogle PlayTuneInPocket CastsStitcher, and Player.FM.

Steam’s best-selling 2017 games include ARK, Warframe, and H1Z1

With 2017 officially over and done, Steam’s taking a moment to report on its best-selling games over the course of the whole year. While there are no specifics shared as to which title sold how many copies, Valve does roughly rank games according to overall sales.

In the “platinum” category are several familiar online titles, including ARK: Survival Evolved, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, H1Z1, Warframe, and Dota 2.

Moving down into “gold,” we find Elder Scrolls Online crowing happily. “Silver” sellers mark Conan Exiles, Black Desert Online, War Thunder, and Path of Exile among the third-tier titles. The list is rounded out with other MMOs and MOBAs like Paladins, Elite: Dangerous, and The Division.

Steam’s Winter Sale, which contains many of these games and more, is ending on January 4th.

One Shots: Riding the unicorn charge into 2018

That’s it, folks. It’s time to put the wraps on the bumpy, odd year that was 2017 and get ready to flip our calendars to the pristine landscape of 2018. While the future of MMOs always holds uncertainy, one thing we know for sure: We’re going to screenshot the heck out of it.

To put a bow on 2017, I asked Massively OP readers to submit their absolute best screenshot from this past year — and the community took up the task with gusto. We’ll start things off today with Hugmonster showing us what a dignified, serious game Guild Wars 2 can be.

“My best screenshot of the year? Obviously me launching a stampede of rainbow unicorns!” he shared.
