The Daily Grind: When’s the last time an MMO made you laugh?

81

There are few things that I love more in gaming than to have a genuine laugh-out-loud moment. Maybe something silly and stupid happens in a game (such as a Guild Wars 2 glitch that made dead sharks float above land), maybe it’s clever or weird quest writing, or maybe it’s just the game’s cheekiness coming through.

Kingdom of Loathing got more than a few chuckles from me for its absurdist grammarian humor, but I am equally fond of the black humor of Fallen Earth and The Secret World.

So cynicism aside, when’s the last time an MMO made you laugh?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Zentia made me laugh because of the funny things the mobs would say… long time ago
Istaria, that mob when you killed it… a squirrel popped out of it’s mouth and waved bye to you. Laugh out loud funny
Glitch…. everything made you smile
the elder scrolls online… not the game persay… but the roleplay opportunities with others can get hilarious!

WildStar made me a laugh quite a bit. I enjoy that particular spot on the sliding scale of humor vs. drama. The Secret World, for all its darkness, has some delightfully quirky characters — Kirsten Geary’s after-mission briefs for Illuminati agents are balls-out hilarious in some places, and even the villains aren’t above dropping a few bon mots.

Rift, the nightmare quests. It all took place in a weird dream-land. There was a quest where you had to milk ugly udder-demons, and bring the milk to somewhere. Now this was both disgusting and funny, but the next quest made me laugh. It was something “Okay, now put that milk back to the udder-demons.”.

Not an MMO but an RPG called Bard’s Tale, made me laugh my socks off! … I guess LotRO is too serious and Orcs have a lousy sense of humor.

Off the top of my head, because it was pretty recent. Bumping into a dog that wanted me to collect bones to construct it’s now undead owner. Then just talking to the skeleton. It was just a surreal quest that made me chuckle.

The “Mask of Kan’ami” is quite the hilarious NPC in The Secret World : “You know, I think with the cannibalism, we’re even past Shakespeare now.”

MMO:
GW2 NPC exchanges (Skritt and Asura’s mostly), FFXIV quest names, WS Chua comments and few others (played too much different MMOs ;))

Non-MMO:
Deadpool takes the top with most laughs/min even tho is a pretty dumb gameplay, and ofc Deathspank series.
