World of Warplanes’ new dogfight contest pits the P51D against the Bf109G

Wargaming has unveiled a new contest in World of Warplanes that runs through July 1st. It pits two legendary World War II fighter planes against one another in a month-long duel to see which plane — and which WoWP pilots — reign supreme.

Playing is pretty easy: pick your favorite plane and play a battle. Each week, “the top pilot in each plane will be determined by base XP earned in a single battle.” The two winners will receive a tier VIII premium plane, as will a random pilot of each plane. During the last week of the contest, Wargaming will select the top six pilots as well as two random pilots for tier VIII rewards.

How does this make the site but World of Warships Beta didn’t?

Akaname The Bf 109’s core design has just been overused so much throughout its lifespan. It was only a matter of time before the Allies brought something to the table that could both fight at the same altitude and outperform the old German design.

I wonder how the Bearcat would fare against the German designs. It too was standing at the pinnacle of prop driven design. I’m willing to bet the Bearcat could even give the P-51 a run for its money.

Ah yes, the old ol’ P-51 vs Bf.109 rivalry. I’ve flown plenty of each in WT and I can honestly say I enjoy them both equally. The Mustang fares better in agility fighting but both are exceptional energy fighters.

Akaname i think late-model mustangs had 6 50-caliber guns, 3 in each wing, that was devastating.

Yes seriously the Mustang was pretty much the pinnacle of propeller-driven fighter plane.   Germany’s answer to that was the ME262 jet.
I haven’t yet earned a Mustang in WoWP but I do have an ME109 and I have to say I enjoy it.   It’s a well-balanced mix of dogfighter, guns, durability.   A big leap up from the older generation of German planes.    But the A6 (zero) is also a great dogfighter, arguably more nimble, but has absolutely no armor whatsoever, it seems to be made of balsa wood.   it’s fun to fly though.
I love my old P40 with shark teeth, but it is really a 1930s warplane and obsolete compared to these others.

Compared side by side in the real world, the P-51 Mustang would win over the Bf109G, simply by having better stats all over. For example longer range, higher speed, better climb rate, higher ceiling. The only part where the Bf109G would win over the Mustang stat-wise, is firepower.
