Champions Online is revamping its tutorial

If you ever felt let down or confused over Champions Online’s introductory experience, then the team would like to welcome you to try it again soon. Cryptic is hard at work revamping its tutorial experience, changing it to be themed as a virtual training exercise at the Ravenswood Academy. The Academy will also show up in the game world near the Renaissance Center.

“It’s the perfect time for us to take a fresh look at our tutorial and what new players experience in Champions Online,” Cryptic said. “We’re making some changes to provide better immersion, faster flow, reduced friction points, and clearer explanation of game mechanics.”

Robenix But still your first action in the game is meaningless. You aren’t fighting real foes, you aren’t saving real people.

DonaldBrown I’m pretty sure the flavor justification in game is going to be that you’re just testing the simulation so it’s in working order. It’s not meant to paint every concept in a corner that “everyone’s a student”; though the fact a Ravenswood location is being added is going to be valuable for those that want to use it.

In almost every MMO, I’ve played, you’ve started as a person of note. Superhero games, you’re a superhero being thrown into a disaster to save the day. WOW, you’re an adventurer killing foes and doing good. In theory, what you do matters, from the first time your new character logs in.

Now – it’s a simulation. You’re a student. You’re being put through paces by someone to be tested. And what you do doesn’t matter at all.

In CO, throughout your career, some civilians will run up to you and say how impressed and thankful they are that you took on the Q’lar. What now? “I heard you aced your final.”

Werewolf Finds Dragon I have always been able to play the hero I want to play. Don’t know what game you are playing. Probably DCUO or Marvel.

Midgetsnowman Red Alert Sorry, I don’t know what the final decision was on the CO forums rumor-mill. I only know what STO and Neverwinter devs have stated on the official forums, which is “All three games use the exact same version of the exact same engine.”
The problem isn’t CO’s version of the engine, the problem is that retrofitting the Foundry for CO and CO’s art style would require dev effort. And since the game’s been in maintenance mode since they fired Bill Roper in 2010…

Sigh.
I logged in for the first time in a year or so and faffed about a bit just to see what was up and to look at costumes. Game is so empty and free archetypes are still so, SO bad it’s funny. That was one of the original reasons I never invested in CO. The character and costume creator bit was fantastic, and in theory the powers aspect should have been a blast too but the reality of the free archetypes was such a turnoff I never bothered to look at the paid stuff. I’ve played the paid ones when they’ve done free trial weeks now and then, and the difference is night and day. That doesn’t make me want to sub, that makes me log off and go play a different game (and thus give my money to a different company).

One thing that didn’t put me off was the Tutorial. Yeah OK it’s not great and has its tedium but honestly once you’ve done it once you can skip it – so what’s the problem with it as it currently stands?

In other words, of all the things the dev team could have put time into improving, they picked something that didn’t really need it.
Sigh.

Midgetsnowman RicharddeLeonIII Werewolf Finds Dragon Spacejesus3k Point taken, but my hope is with the game and community.  I hope they get the attention they deserve.  The last thing i want is for this game to shut down, private servers irk me to no end since most of the time they cant add real new content anyway.

Peregrine_Falcon Red Alert I’m pretty sure both of these games use a modified version of the engine. Because that topic has been discudded to death and that is the general conclusion on the matter that goes around.

Peregrine_Falcon Red Alert The problem is, far as we can tell, the foundry only works in a much newer version of that engine. And CO makes nowhere near enough money for CO to bother retrofitting the entire engine to the newer version for a game they dont care about.
