The Daily Grind: How do you absorb lore in MMOs?

71

I have a troubled relationship with lore in MMOs. On one hand, I am a narrative junkie and deeply appreciate detailed and interesting game worlds that have thought-out histories and sagas. On the other hand, I often find myself bumbling about in-game, only getting snatches here and there of the overall picture and becoming frustrated at the piecemeal approach of absorbing lore.

Maybe books have spoiled me? Maybe that’s just a hazard of playing MMOs? But I’m curious today how you absorb lore in MMOs. Do you read all of the quest text and tooltips? Do you spend your extra time combing through wikis after hours? Does someone have to sit you down and walk you through all of the historical complexities? Or are you generally as lost as I am?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Veldan thatchefdude If you played Tomb Raider 2013 and liked it or loved it you will love this one… It has much better graphics (if you have the hardware capable of pushing it GTX 970 or R9 390 to get 1080p60fps on High Settings), a great soundtrack, similar gameplay but with more evolved systems for using stealth if you would like to do that rather than blow everything up (I prefer to use stealth more to thin the crowd and than take out what’s left), an improved crafting system, similar skill point system to first game, and stellar voice acting…

Also, besides the great graphics, the motion capture work on the characters in cutscenes is being talked about by many gamers as some of the best ever done in gaming, stellar stuff that really looks lifelike. Watch some of the youtube streams of people playing it on beefy PCs at max settings, make sure you watch it in at least 720p60fps on youtube for full benefit… It looks stunning in real time rendering.

The story is better balanced than the first game, and I appreciate going with Russo-Slavic lore rather than more traditional European or South American usually found in these type of games…

One thing I really must commend Crystal Dynamics on with the series is choosing a Japanese mythology and Russo-Ottoman mythology for the two games, staying far away from overly used European and South/Central America mythology tropes… It’s quite refreshing…

For me to care about lore, it needs to be in the main game.  Text infodump is fine, and I don’t mind if I have to go looking for books or obscure events, sometimes that’s part of the fun, but it should be *in* the game.  I can’t connect with the lore of a game where I had to find out all the background material by reading a website/blog post/wiki/series of outside novels.

Greaterdivinity Ah, so you were referring to the execution being dumb, rather than the idea. I agree with you there, at least on the integration part. Recent MMOs left a lot to be desired there.

Veldan Most of it is extremely poorly written and even less of it is integrated into the world in an effective and engaging manner.

Well, I mean the cash shop aspect is how it is currently delivered, but before cash shops there were plenty of immersion breaking costumes & mounts that got distributed through seasonal events … It has kind of accelerated the rate at which irrelevance & irreverence to the game lore has set in, but this type of crap has always been there.

wanderv15 RuneScape has awesome lore too imo, crappy old browser game as it may be. I spent quite some hours on wiki reading about it. They also released a few novels, though I can’t seem to get my hands on those. I’m not sure if they’re still being sold.

Greaterdivinity Why is it dumb?

Xijit Yeah, this is one of the things I hate most about this cash shop era of MMOs

thatchefdude Off topic a bit, but how’s Rise of the Tomb Raider overall? I’ve been doubting whether I should buy it. I went to the buy page on Steam a few times but haven’t decided yet :p
