Long-running Korean shooter Gunz is getting a second lease on life

7

After launching way back in 2003, South Korea’s Gunz: The Duel had an impressive 10-year run as an online PvP shooter (it launched in North America in 2006). Eventually the game wound down and the decision was made to pull the plug in May 2013, especially in light of its sequel coming out just a year later.

However, a new publisher is trying to give Gunz another go. Masangsoft picked up the title and recently ran it through a closed beta test with the hopes of re-releasing it in the region. A big question mark is hovering over the prospect of bringing it back to North America and Europe.

Masangsoft is also handling Gunz 2: The Second Duel on Steam.

tobascodagama Sorenthaz Actually, the community initially was nice enough where a player would sit down with you for ~15 minutes to explain how to properly execute k-style. I remember being taught to map my skills correctly and loving this game to bits. Gunz 2 completely ruined the pace of the game compare to k-style in Gunz 1, and the PvE dungeons were far less exciting.
I’m pretty happy to see this news and will be crossing my fingers for it to have some life breathed back into it. It’s a damn shame this game went down the gutter due to the ridiculously high amount of hackers in it. The protection must’ve been at fault, but you’d run into hackers every other match and eventually just not want to play it anymore lol.

Sorenthaz Yeah, lots of great, creative multiplayer games from that era were ruined by exploity mechanics that the devs couldn’t keep up with. Like bunnyhopping in most of the Quake/HL-engine mods.

I remember playing the hell out of this game. Was pretty fun since it was my first online fps; but it got boring when everyone and their grandmas uses katanas and super speed. Was quite silly

That soundtrack still gets played on my headphones to this day.

I thought Gunz 2 was the one that was shut down.
Weird.
Either way for its time, Gunz was awesome and introduced a lot of interesting tricks and stunts that you could pull off.  It was very Matrix-y in that sense as you could wall run and air-dash and so on.  But Gunz was a nightmare with its whole “K-Style” junk that basically exploited player frames in order to continually dash around in the air and do stuff that wasn’t normally possible.  Which turned me off because I wasn’t able to figure it out.
Gunz 2 pretty much undid the original charm of Gunz in favor of class-based stuff, which was interesting but didn’t really feel that great to me at least.  Sounds like it’s had pretty crappy reception as well.

Makes me wonder how they plan to compete with private servers.
