The Daily Grind: Are there character options in an MMO you want to enjoy but never like?

I like the style these ladies have.

Demon Hunters are a class I really want to enjoy in World of Warcraft, but I’ve never really succeeded at that goal. This is despite having one at the level cap, too. It’s not that they’re terrible or badly designed or unfun, either; their gameplay isn’t a problem. They just don’t speak as much to me, personally, and so I’ve never been much more than mediocre at playing one. No matter how much I might want it to be otherwise, the dash-back-and-forth playstyle for Havoc doesn’t feel fun to me.

Do I want it to change? Well, from a selfish standpoint, I definitely do for my own enjoyment. But in terms of actual game design? The design works very well and is fun for a lot of people to play, and asking all of that to change just for my personal sake feels selfish in the extreme.

I think we’ve all got classes, jobs, or character builds along those lines, options that we really want to enjoy but wind up not having much fun with. And I think it’s good to acknowledge that. So what about you, dear readers? Are there character options in an MMO you want to enjoy but have never liked? And if so, have you tried to overcome that dislike or just accepted that it’s not for you?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Melee classes in any game except GW2. They look fun when I see other people play them, but in practice, I hate having to run up to smack something, and I hate having my field of view mostly filled up with some mob’s belly button.

IDK why it’s different for me in GW2. Maybe because you always have a ranged option if you need it. Maybe because the combat is very mobile on all classes due to active dodge mechanics.

Action combat.

Games like Black Desert and Tera’s action look so much fun, but I just can’t get into it. Maybe it’s because it’s too fast to keep track of, or maybe it’s because I’m getting older and can’t keep up with it. I like PvP in games so when I play a game like this and someone is literally teleporting, animation cancelling and bouncing all over the place I can’t stand it. I want to love it because it looks awesome, but I can’t play these types of MMORPGs for more than a couple hours before I quit. I’ll take a hybrid like Guild Wars 2, or a traditional tab-target MMO any day.

Healers

I’ve never even made it to max level with a healer in an MMO. The leveling process alone is just tedious (and I hate leveling to begin with) but even when you start doing group content, the gameplay is always too easy and you have no control over the fight at all. All you do is keep health bars up and hope that everyone else in the group can actually complete the content.

Pets

The idea is cool, the implementation always sucks. They’re either cosmetic and thus pointless, or they do something useful which means my character has to be worse in order to maintain balance. But, it’s the AI that always gets to me, it’s always shit.

Shallow Combat

Not sure you’d call this a character option, but I hate shallow combat mechanics. If I’m gonna be playing a game for 100s or 1000s of hours, the combat has to be engaging. If it’s shallow, it means you can learn it too quickly and then you’re just going through the motions. This, unfortunately, means I end up ruling out the majority of MMOs, especially in this day and age of action combat which is extremely shallow.

I always wanted to be “The Healer”, you know the one he comes with permanent illumination in his name and when it is spoken it is only in hushed tones of awe and respect. The guy who is on everyone’s friend’s list with 6 stars out of five and everyone you know has a friend who has a story about how this guy single-handedly healed thru the worst run in history and averted many certain wipes.

And I try, with every game I pick a healer work on the system try to get it down but then four or five people die someones screams at me I lose my shit and then I’m on that same list with a -5 stars and KOS by my name.

I want to heal you, you stupid freaking pigs!

Druid. Shaman. Mage. Priest. Warrior. Monk. I want to like them and I’ve seen people do incredible things with them, playing them really well, but I just can’t be bothered. I get started and yawn myself to logging out. There’s no pull for me. DK, Pally, Rogue… I can’t seem to get into anything else. Didn’t even really give Demon Hunters a chance.

Might play DH if they let me do what I love doing with my DK: Barrelling into world bosses, telling /general: “I’m gonna kill this thing now, pile on if you want credit.”

DH, yup. I had to fly to the class order hall because I could never make that jump. I’m totally there with you.

I wish I liked the bard archetype more. Everybody waxes erotic over the arcane archer or the dashing mystical rogue but tbh I always find them kinda shitty at everything they do.

I like the concept, the support role with song but I often times just wish for a proper mage or thief.

Bards are only great with a good human GM (which means no MMOs). They’re doable if you just want to hang out in an inn and play music, or if the game is specifically designed for bard (Like, oh, the newer The Bard’s Tale).

Not to discredit your effort Mr. Eliot…but max level on Demon Hunter? Not too much effort. Dropping DH after the few hours it takes for max seems more like a trial than maximum effort spent.

Pretty sure you can tell if you’re going to like a class or not if you’ve leveled it to max and got all of the abilities.

It’s not like there is some super secret gameplay difference between ilvl 885 and 955.

Wasn’t my point. I wasn’t trying to talk him into DH. You start Demon Hunter at lvl 98 and are at max level after doing far less than the Legion quests. In other words, even if you don’t like the class – not much time wasted – no biggie.

I have no idea how you expected me to get that from your previous comment

for me it’s Druids in WoW. I want to like them…. i just don’t want to play the entire game as a bear, cat or owlbear. It feels like the character creation and cosmetic gear is just wasted.

The owl bear can be changed to an astral version of your regular self if you want. They’re basically star mages.

I agree, the druid is a class I feel like I should like but I don’t. They’re like cats for me, I hate them for no good reason.

The problems that bother me with a druid is that they get too much for free, instant flying, mount gathering, stealth with heals, tank form as dps (this might have changed) tons of options on how to play, often the best at their role depending on what patch it is….

The only thing that I can see to make druids more interesting is instead of just sitting in kitty form you have a bunch of abilities that shape shift you so you’re more of a character with animalistic magic rather than a guy that turns into a bear.

Nuker casters. I’m pretty happy with casters using DoTs, CCs, or small instant skills, but those with a majority of nuke skills requiring long casts and standing on spot are particularly boring to me. I’ve tried the archetype in quite a few games, but even when they are the overpowered class, I just don’t get interested, I only get sleepy.
